If you plan on just purchasing balls of yarn that are already whined into  
balls mostly what you find in places like Joann's and Hobby Lobby you won't 
need  a swifter, but if you get yarns that are hanks you definitely  need  
one.  
 
Many of the yarn shops have their own winders and  they do have a  variety 
of yarns in hanks.
