[Nfb-krafters-korner] knitting

Becky,

I would not use a pencil sharpener. Maybe rub a fine grain piece of sand
paper lightly over it.

I think you should just keep knitting since things are going so well for
you. Give some thought to how you can incorporate a crocheted chain into
the bind-off. Let me know if you need an idea.

Keep up the momentum. Your friend will love it.

Annette

It isn't particularly bothering me, but at the point of one of the wooden
needles is a scratch small but deep. Kind of going from the close to tip
kind of running diagonally about a half inch. Any way to get rid of the
scratch. The yarn isn't catching, which surprises me. I was thinking maybe
a pencil sharpener?

You're right Annette, I should have done up a swotch. Well anyway I am
going to let this run a bit longer as I don't now see anything terribly odd
with the base row. It does seem wider apart then the next rows. But
remember gang I am pretty much a novas needle knitter.

I was listening to some comedy on the computer earlier this afternoon. Well
wouldn't you know I laughed and the needles hit something and three stitches
popped off. But there they were ready to be put on again. I tell you this
is a God thing I am doing.

Maybe I could top stitch that first chain row to pull the stitches closer.
What I mean is run a slip stitch over the wide chain, if the wide chain
looks odd.

Anyway, listening for your wisdom.

Becky and Jake

I'm assuming that you used each stitch of your foundation chain to create a
stitch to put on your knitting needle. So if you had 3 chain stitches per
inch and your foundation chain was 36 inches long, then you probably ended
up with 108 stitches on your knitting needles. Now depending on your
knitting needle size you may or may not end up with a knitted fabric with a
width of 36 inches.

If there is a small discrepancy between the crocheted foundation and the
knitted fabric, you can decide to keep going and consider a crocheted edge
on the bind-off edge, or around the entire shawl. If there is a large
discrepancy, you might want to start over and consider changing your crochet
hook to adjust the length of the foundation chain.

If the crocheted cast-on edge is larger than the knitted fabric, then you
will need to use a smaller crochet hook. If the crocheted cast-on edge is
smaller than the knitted fabric, then you need a larger crochet hook.

Before ripping out what you have completed, using a variety of crochet hook
sizes and the same yarn you are working with, make some sample foundation
chains with the same number of stitches that are on your knitting needles.
When one of these foundation chains end up being the same length as the
width of the knitted fabric, then you will have found the correct crochet
hook to use.

I hope this makes sense. Let me know if it does not.

Annette

Not exactly, I just started and have several inches finished and realized I
used a bigger crochet hook to start the piece then knitting needle size.
Will the first base row be too wide? And how wide will the actual piece be
if I started with thirty six inches chain.

Forgive this grasshopper oh great teacher.

Becky and Jake who says, paw darn it! Times to play. Put dem pointy things
down, arf.

Are you saying that you have finished the prayer shawl and your crocheted
foundation row is wider than the knitted stitches? If so, did you consider
using the same crochet hook you used for the foundation row to crochet an
edge all around the shawl? What about blocking the piece. I's rather
crochet an edge rather than blocking as I hate blocking even more than
swotching and seaming. The honest truth is that I have no good reason to
hate blocking.

Here I am knitting. Hopefully I wil get this. prayer shawl finished, well
before my friend dies. My friend Bonnie has lung cancer. Last year she
gave me her mother's knitting needles. A great big role of needles. For
those of you who know me, well, knitting is just not as fun as crochet. So
I took our knitting class and the teacher deserves two pay raises for her
patience with me. So back to Bonnie. I woke up and had this wonderful
idea. I would make Bonnie a prayer shawl using her mother's knitting
needles. So here I am knitting away.

I have a cone of happy bright mint green yarn and that is what I am using
for the prayer shawl.

Since I still need help with cast on, I just crocheted my base row. I make
it around thirty six inches. So how wide will my piece be? Shockingly my
stitches are pretty darn even on this probably J hook wooden needles.

Oh hey rooky mistake, shy smile. I used an N hook to make my base row.
Oopse. I just noticed that. I just reached in the role and pulled out a well
used pair of needles, assuming her mother had used them.

Ok, your evaluation of my questions and mistakes.

Becky and Jake
