Let me make a suggestion . I use a metal nail file. It has a place to
hold on and it is tapered at the point and thin. It even has the grit so it
won't slip. Give it a try and let us know how this works for you.

Hi  all,
I am playing with making more earings. All goes well until
I try to separate or squeeze something - anything between the split part
of
the ring. What a pain! I am ready to give up before I stab my self with a
sharp knife. My alternative is to wait for my daughter with nails of
steel;
she got the first ones on for me and all she does is stick her nail
between
the little split area of the ring.
What are others  doing?
I'm ready to move to jump rings - no split.
