[Nfb-krafters-korner] blind carpenter

I'd like hand tools but do understand how things like sanders could be
useful.

Do you have a favorite wood?

David,

That's where you and I differ. I love the noise except when several saws
are going at once. Yes, it's better to start with hand tools like we did at
Louisiana Center and then move to power tools, especially if you've never
worked with tools before.

Regards,

Denise

I once read a young adult book and it mentioned in the olden days carpenters
and boat builders had specialized hand tools for each part of the building
process. I liked that and would have wanted to learn that first and
gradually moved to power tools. I f ind the noise power tools make
upsetting.

Well, JD is a character, that's for sure. No, it wasn't dangerous because
he's great at teacing safety tips. Yes, he gives the students one on one
but, then he lets them go on their own. I mean, that's the structured
discovery method. JD doesn't help that much. In fact, he let me roam
around the shop for about 15 minutes one time until I found my way. He
doesn't do that on the first try, though. I really liked James. I think I
learned more from him than JD. Some of the students thought he was a bit
harsh but, I really enjoyed working with him and I really regret not having
the time to complete a project. The biggest thing in the shop was safety.
I'm sure you would have done well, especially if I'd been there to mentor
you.

Regards,

Denise

I attended LCB back in the Stone Age pre JD. I cannot imagine doing any of
this. It just sounds so dangerous! I'm almost glad I was not there when
they started that stuff. I could not get a reading on JD when I was
attending the state convention the one time I went last year. I hope you
get lots of one-on-one. I worry my mind wanders so much I'd snip a finger.
It does sound most interesting and I'm glad you liked the class.

Lindy,

When I trained at the Louisiana Center for the Blind, I learned how to use
the table saw, radial arm saw, band saw, and sander. I also used the router
which was a problem for me since I had difficulty holding it when going
around the wood. I also used a hand drill and drill press. We had to make
a Braille block which is a block of wood which has pegs in it to represent
the Braille dots. It took lots of work because the instructor was very
specific about precision work. I never got to do a project because I
graduated but, my husband Adam made a mantle clock and learned home
maintenance skills like marking and using a circuit breaker and fixing a
toilet. I'm not sure I could still do some of the work I did back in
Louisiana but, I'll bet once I got into it, I could do it. the one thing I
wanted to learn was how to hand a picture but, we didn't use hammers or
nails on our projects.

I hope this helps you. I can tell you that when I started, I was scared
because I had never worked around power tools before. I learned how to use
a valuable device called a click ruler and how to make a grid with a scratch
awl and mallot.
We had a long piece of wood called stock and had to bring it with us so we
could work on our Braille blocks. I grew to love it and mentored several
students who didn't like shop.

Regards,

Denise

Wow, Denise, I'd love to do some stuff around the house or even be able to
do some simple wood crafts.
My son, now 7, is also interested, and I'd love to do some basic stuff with
him as well.
What kind of power tools have you learnt to use?
Lindy
