Very simple, you scan the barcode and on the left bottom there is a button and you hold it down and talk.  It will then when you scan it will say what  you recorded.  If you want to change it or didn't like what you said the button above it you push and it will ask if you want to delete it, push it again  and it is gone.

Besides that it updates every year a new list of ppre recorded  bar  codes available.  

The nice thing about the ID Mate is that 90% of items have barcodes on them  from the manufactuer and for those things that don't have a barcode they sell a  variety of types of labels for the ID Mate and keep track of the number/barcodes  that you have purchased.

I always asked John how many carbs were in things and had him read the labels, as I have to count my carbohydrates  and take a certain amount of  fast acting insulin to cover my carbs and blood sugar level.  That is why I broke out the ID Mate this week.  I keep it handy, but it was easy with  John reading it to me.

So these labels have some sort of numbering?  With the ID  mate, you  get the bar code label with a number on it or whatever, but as  you purchase more of them they send you the lables beginning from the next  label or number after  the last number that they sent to you.  So  there is no repeats just a continuous numbering for the ID Mate to scan and  read.  

I pulled out the ID Mate to give it a try on some frozen  dinners that I  
got.  I wanted to be sure that the cooking  instructions were on it.   They 
were there.

Is the recording saved on the machine or the label?   I  am thinking on  
the pen itself.  If it is saved on the pen,  then  you would need to use 1 
label, but record it on both   pens.
