You will need a circular knitting needle 40 inches long size [00] or [0].

Suggestion of placement of life line:

repeat of a pattern example pattern has 8 rows and then it repeats , if
you are going thru a decreasing pattern for a few rows, or space a number of
rows like 5 or 10 rows, etc. You may need to purchase 2 of these long 00
circular needles if you will be repeating a pattern or needing to move a
life line from one to another.

While you are knitting on the required size needles that project after
completing a desired number of rows at the beginning of a row or round that you
want to place the life line while stitches are on your needle or needles
take the 00 circular needle and slide thru your row of stitches keeping
knitting needles in place. Let ends dangle on each end out of your way and
continue your next row of knitting. example: work next 10 rows of pattern and
then put another 00 life line in at that point and continue knitting next
rows. Once the second life line is in place you can remove the first life
line.
 Other placement suggestion:

Before beginning series of decrease rows place life line and then begin
your decreases.

Now how to use this life line if needed.

If you drop a stitch or make a mistake you can take your working needles
out of your knitting and rip back to the life line. Use the life line
needle to put your stitches onto your working needles. You can leave the life
line in place or once you have the stitches back on your working needles
replace the life line back into that row.and then continue on.

A 40 inch circular 00 needle is suggested as it should be long enough for
most projects and it is very thin and you have the point of the needle to
help you to put in place or move stitches.
