Yes, you want at least 27 pegs for the mittens, but the more pegs you have the more flexible the
loom will be for you. Yes, 1/2 gauge will work best and you can use bulky or even worsted weight
yarn then. Right, don't forget the center peg. I see that Jill sent you the link, so you are good
to go.
Now the only question is, when is your birthday? <grin>
