Hi Melisa,
Adding to the great tips Barb already shared:
you can simply touch the yarn on a peg or slip it off of the peg to see the loop. If it is twisted,
then it is an EWrap(twisted knit stitch), but if the loop is flat then it is a purl. As for
telling what is what further down the piece, you can't because the idea of making one knit row
followed by a purl row is to make the fabric look the same on the inside and the outside. So when
your round is complete, you can use it on either side.
However, if you were knitting across a row and made one knit and then one purl, and did this on a
few rows, this would show up nicely as a textured ribbing.
