Terry,

If your first row is single crochet stitches then end your scard in
single crochet stitches. After completing the last stitch, cut the
yarn to make a short tail and tuck that tail through the last stitch.
This makes a little bit of a knot. Be sure to weave in the remainder
of the tail.
