Yes it can be an image with or without words. Examples would be like the
Nike swoosh, looks like a fancy check mark or coca cola has the distinct
cursive writing , then you have the large K in kmart, hope this gives you
some ideas.  It is basically a visual clue which automatically identifies
your product group or organization.

It is usually a graphic and can also have writing.  The first NFB logo was a
triangle with a word on each side of the triangle.
