Lindy, your project sounds so lovely, In actual fact, I think an email class
would work well, for as you have outlined what you achieved in how you set
out your book, and me too, but in a far simpler way. The instructions are
fairly straight forward and as things take a little while to put together,
great to be able to refer back to email notes. Just having some tips and
ideas on setting up a cardboard page would get us started. I too find the
time a bit difficult to catch up on chat classes, though I'd love to do
that.

I forgot to say that I too used envelopes, but they weren't nicely crafted
ones, that is a great idea, mine were just some I bought from the scrapbook
store, but they were nice sturdy ones and like you, I tucked all sorts of
trinkets and notes into the envelopes. My cousin had been a very skilled
dressmaker, she and a friend actually came second in the Australian Gown of
the Year award years back. I was able to find lots of off cuts of
materials she had used in dressmaking in the past and tucked them into the
envelopes. My cousin is in a nursing home now, so the album of memories is
something she treasures and it was lovely to hear how much she loved the
book.

All this scrapbooking talk has made me think I should do one for our family,
sometimes we forget our own memories.

Very best wishes. Valerie

Hi Valerie and all,
Wow, your project sounds like a great one. I have done some scrap booking,
mainly a book for my two children. Before I got started I didn't know
anything at all about scrap booking. I had a vague idea that it was about
putting some photos in an album and it sounded like I'd need to see to do it
and I thought maybe it wouldn't be enjoyable either.
Someone from another list, also totally blind, told me she had done a very
basic scrap book, and that she really enjoyed it, so I thought I'd give it a
try.
I found out that scrap booking can be so much more than just placing photos
in an album. Actually, as Valerie mentions, photos are just one part of the
craft and I found that placing a photo or a few photos onto a page isn't
that much of a problem. I basically followed the same process as Valerie has
described. Finding the supplies and things to use, printing out poems,
sayings or something you have written yourself, finding things that have
some centimental meaning, etc. Is all part of the process. I would place my
photos more or less where I wanted them and it would take no time at all for
someone with sight just to line them up exactly.
I have also used Braille and origami and things like fabric, wool, ribbon,
textured paper, etc. To make my pages very tactile. One can also, for
example, fold envelopes using origami and then glue them to your pages,
filling them with notes or keep sakes.
To answer Jill's question, a few years ago I met someone from the U.K.
through another e-mail list. She has since passed away, but she did have a
cutting machine and it seemed to me she was able to use it fairly
independently. She actually sent me a parcel with some of the cut-outs she
had made from old Braille paper. They included fish, dolphins, elephants,
flowers, small doll figures, etc. And also some cards that were beautifully
cut out and embossed with textured patterns.
I hope this helps at least a little. Maybe a chat on scrap booking would be
a good idea, although I might not be able to attend because of the time
difference, or maybe someone could think of a small project we could try
using an e-mail class?
I'll really have to think if something like that might work.
Lindy

Hi, I would love to know more about scrapbooking. Recently I put together a
book for a relative, kind of a history of her life from baby up until today.
I didn't make up the book myself as I wasn't sure how to do that, creating a
cover etc, but instead bought an album and bought themed scrapbook cardboard
pages to insert that almost decorated it without much more work. I did the
book in peach and blue colours, blue and white dotted cardboard sheets,
checkered peach and white coloured sheets as well and bought strips of
pearls, tiny silver stars and silver flowers to glue in place. As I had no
vision to correctly place anything, I was however, able to put the stars and
flowers into corners of the pages and the pearl strips were not too hard to
place as I levelled them with the edges of the page. I did need help to
locate the photos and diary entries so they were straight on the pages. It
was so much fun choosing at the scrapbook store amazing how many themes you
can choose from. I also used the computer to print out stories about her
childhood happenings and inserted those too. I enjoyed doing the whole
project. If a scrapbook session came along, I'd love to know more and
especially what is out there to decorate pages with and how to do certain
things that vips can manage. I'm sure there would be heaps of other things
we could do to decorate books, the above are only just simple things, but I
did not have many other ideas.

I found a pair of wrist length red gloves that my cousin wore way back in
the 1950's she had worn them to a teenagers ball dance: I tucked them into
the book too.

Cheers Valerie

Please let me know about any paper crafts and scrap book success. I am
interested in this myself.
Thanks
