Deb,
I will give you a couple of tips that help me.
When you enter on the download for free link, it will open up at the very
bottom of the page a second link which will say download a pdf version of
whatever the pattern is called.  I usually just do a control end to get to
the bottom and then arrow up from there to find the actual pdf.  Some of the
patterns will say it is a free download and then there is a link to the
person's blog and that is where the pattern is.  I hope this helps.
