Hello Deb,
I'm blinder than a bat I'm afraid. I have all my hooks rubber-banded together and touch the ends to
see which hook is which. I may mistake an H hook for an I, or an F for a G, but I can get pretty
close to knowing which hook is which by feeling the hook's size. After all, one needs to swatch for
many projects so it doesn't matter much which hook you have as long as you can get the gauge. 
I know that some folks have their hooks very organized, in a special case for them, placed in order
of size. if I were using crochet hooks regularly I would probably have an organized system for
myself. 

As for the metrics, I simply look it up online. Takes just a moment on google.
