Ashley,

Sewing pieces of material together is one aspect of quilting.  Another part
of it is the technique used to keep the front, back and filling in place.
Sometimes this involves using small lengths of some type of thread, string,
yarn, etc to tie knots in some type of pattern.  The knots are threaded
through all layers of the quilt.  Another technique and the most popular is
when stitches are sewn over the surface of the quilt through all of its
layers in a pattern.  This pattern could be parallel lines running
horizontal, vertical or diagonally, parallel and perpendicular lines to form
a grid or series of boxes, or even curved lines or circles can be used.  It
is up to the quilter and what they want their finished quilt to look like.

so, isn't quilting a form of sewing as you have to sew the quilt pieces
together? I thought  a quilt was a bunch of cut blocks sewn together.

what's the difference?

If you all made a class, do a one without sewing machine as not everyone has
one and hand sewing is a good way to start.
