A swift is a tool used to hold a hank of yarn while it is being wound off. It has an adjustable diameter so that it can hold hanks of many sizes, and rotates around a central rod. They are generally made out of wood or metal, however other materials may also be used.
From what I can tell, when you purchase certain wools or more pricey yarns, they come in hanks rather than skeins. Hanks are wound into big circles then twisted together, folded in half and twisted again. In order to wind the yarn into a ball, you untwist the hank, lay it around the outside of the swift, then either use a ball winder or your hand to wind the yarn into a ball.
