Joyce,

I think your approach is good with new members. I think putting out there
that you will do a newby chat is September for example is a bad idea. That
encourages me to hold my questions and forget them until that time. I think
it promotes taking longer for a new person to get involved too because they
don't have the information they may feel they need. For me, the Q&A or an
introductory e-mail makes more sense because it says get involved right now
and here is some information you may want to know. Also, encourage the new
member to ask questions of a certain person or even the old members. I had a
question about what happens in a class regarding do I have to struggle to
take down the pattern and do the steps and everything all at once in a
class. I asked an old member I was talking with and got a very good answer.
So, my question is dealt with and I'm just waiting til August 5 for your
class. So, maybe move what you already do up to the beginning of a person's
time. For example, maybe a person would be interested in a class or two.
But, they learn that dues are $20. For whatever reason, that may not be for
them. So, they can make a judgment and decision before waiting to take a
class. It might be some other rule or policy. That was just an example.
Maybe they are looking for a place to constantly sell for example. I've
figured out that sale days seem to be the 1st and 15th. These are just my
thoughts and others may feel differently.

Another questions to the new members in order to do the right thing here for
everyone.

I just would like to know.

I get notices when a new person joins the list. I Usually try to send an
email to the list with some information about our website[including website
address] and about checking out the classes. I treat it like a friendly
hello and if I put something in it like a few folks signed up recently and
introduce your self and let us know what type of crafts you enjoy or want to
learn. This way it gets the group chatting. I feel it is a way for the
newbies to join in the conversation. Some newbies just jump in and
introduce themselves and the conversation is started.

Generally after a newbie has taken their first class, I have aletter that I
send out saying this was your first "Try It Class". And then basically
explain if they want to take more classes then they need to become a paid
member with the option of PayPal or our treasurer's mailing address.

My question is for those new folks would you prefer
1. doing what I do now.
2. Get a written email soon after yu sign on to the list with this
information.
3.A few times a year have a Monday night chat where this information will be
presented and questions answered.

I did do a chat like this in June. I could schedule another one in
September.

I kind of hate jumping in and forcing membership at the get go and that is
why I wait until after the first class is taken.

We mention a "Try It Class for newbies, but it is not written on the website
It is for first time folks taking one of our classes to see if they can
follow thru with our teacher's directions.

Help me make what you think will work and I will consider it.

Joyce

Would it be of interest to the new members that just joined Krafters to 1.
Have a Monday night chat to help you get your questions answered about KK?
2. Or have something linked to the webside or sent by email to you like a Q
and A about KK? I think after convention we have quite a few new members who
have the same questions that need some help on, if that is a Monday night
chat hostess by a member that has been here for sometime or a file kept by a
board member to be sent out in August for new members, this would be a help,
especially for those who do not want to ask questions. Possibly assign the
first chat in Monday for new people. So if there are newbies out there tell
us what you would suggest.
