Another idea for machine sewing is to use a guide to help you stay straight when sewing. They do sell them that are magnetic or attach to your plate, but I have used a piece of cardboard with masking tape to hold it in place as a guide or something thick like plastic canvas stacked on top of each other for the height you want. Try to avoid using wood, since this might cause your fabric to snag.

Cindy, what great ideas! I have a tape measure and a ruler that are both marked.
I was thinking about the dentle floss threader for a needle threader. Great plan!

Michelle,
Do you have a tape measure that is marked? They sell them, or you can ask a reader to use a stapler to mark the inch marks. The first inch is done with the 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 inches also marked with staples.
Use a dental floss threader to thread the needle. Keep it handy on the spool pin.

Well, I did it, I started learning to sew! I made a pillowcase! My friend is showing me.
I'm curious, what tricks of the trade do folks find helpful? I'm so excited!
Seriously, I was discouraged from sewing at school and now I'm doing it.
Would love feedback on any guides or whatever you find helpful.
Michelle
