Bones, nila bones, rope toes and any toy that is good quality hard rubber.
Fabric toys, they tair up easily. Pet smart has a ball with large holes in
it for the dog and person to grab, to through and play tug of war. They
also have single rings and double rings for playing. Two dogs can play with
a double ring or rope toy.
They also have chew treats that help clean their teeth.
I have fun buying Christmas items for the 3 dogs, in my life!

Hi Princess Mara;
Welcome to the group. My name is Sophie, and I am a black lab,I am a guide
dog, which means that I walk my Daddy who can't see around safely.
As for toys,I llike to chew on myhamburger that has a squeaky thing in
it,Mom and Dad know where it is when they step on it.
I also like my hard bone that had good tasting stuff on and in it.
Since you are so young,I would recommend that your Mommy gets you toys with
out squeaky things in them because if you get them out of the toy it could
hurt you if you swallow it.
I have to go now,I'll talk to you again.
Your New Friend
Sophie

Hello Toy Purchaser lol. My you do love the dogs. What a wonderful
hobby/career with the Dachshunds. Thanks for sharing.

Tammy says she can't give a lot of input on toys since she just gets those
hard things that go klunk. Dad says she tries to take apart anything soft
because she's so curious. I'd recommend trying to determine if she is a
chewer. If so, chew safe toys are good. Tammy now just mostly likes to carry
her bones and play with us with them. So, may try a softer something with
close supervision. Tammy even tried to eat the fuzz off a tennis ball. But,
she learned how to throw a black Kong and will go after it. Beware. Orange
Kong is candy to Tammy. It is soft and she just chomps right through it. So,
go slow and also let her tell you what she likes on your acceptable list.

Those treats of pumpkin and cinnamon sound nice. You could try halving one
with her next time. Hey, no sugar!

To clarify things:

I got a fawn colored (golden retriever and Lab [. I use to breed Dachshunds
for more then 20 years and show them. I was into color breeding of
Dachshunds[red, black &tan, chocolate, Blue and tan, Isabella & tan English
Cream and patterns of Dapple, Brindle, and I had a chocolate and tan dapple
piebald besides long hair and smooth.

My Seeing Eye dogs were a German Sheperd and then a Black Lab. I had asked
for a Golden Retriever or Lab the last time I went to the Seeing Eye and got
the Black Lab.

I loved both my Seeing Eye dogs until the day they died and kept each of
them and did not get a replacement until each of them lived out their days
in my home.Since I am so short 4 foot 8 inches I thought why couldn't I have
Stacked a couple of doxies on each other and used them as my Seeinbg Eye
dog. As a kid I grew up wih large dog breeds. So that is why I went with
the Golden Lab now. Who knows in the future I have been curious about the
Cavalere King Charles Spaniel. As they are a small lap dog with a good soft
coat and run 12 to 15 pounds. So JC' s Italian Greyhound tens to want to
sit in my lap especially with Princess Mara around.

It will take some time for adjustment. We had a second great day with no
accidents, too.

I need to go out and buy more play toys for her. Maybe some tennis balls
and softer toys. I got those nylon bones that are shaped like dinosaurs and
they clunk on the hardwood floors. Any suggestions from you dogs out there
on what you like best for toys?

Mom did get me these snacks that are suppose to be made out of pumpkin and
cinnamon. She gave me one and then split one with the Charlie around here.
They sure smelt good and I demolished it pretty fast.

Princess and the toy purchaser

Joyce,

We all have to make decisions of what is right for us in a given instance or
even in general. I only threw that out because it doesn't seem to be widely
discussed. Another factor they did discuss with us was the potential for
discomfort to the dog because many heaters blow directly into that area and
if the dog was laying against that, could get really hot.

But, I am totally confused now! Did you get a 15 pound Dachshund or did you
get a fawn colored goldador (golden retriever and lab cross)?
I understood you to say on Saturday that she was the golden retriever and
lab cross.

Greg,

In the last 18 years that I had my Seeing Eye dog they taught us to ride
with the dog in the front seat curled up in the part you place your feet
in. After I got my first Seeing Eye dog we went to the dealership to
purchase a van and tested it first to be sure she could bet into the van and
then fit between the 2 seats and stretch out toward the back. In any
regular car she sat curled up at my feet.

As I did say I did consider getting in the back seat with her, but I felt
better that I had a pair of eyes to see what was going on. She sat
perfectly well and relaxed very quickly. So everything went OK.

I had like 5 minutes of meeting her and making these decisions and if I
could have gotten her to lie down like my other Seeing Eye dogs I would
have, but at least with the way I did this I had total control of her and
could feel what she was doing and if she was nervous and all of that. It
was a judgement call on my part and we got home all in one piece and safely.

I even considered bringing a crate to put her in the back seat, but I didn't
have any idea of her size. They told me 15 pounds. Well have you ever
tried to think about how large a 15 poundf dog could be? Dachshunds are
packed a lot smaller and closer to the ground. She is a lot of legs and
long thin body. My son thought from the pictures she was a much smaller &
younger pup. She feels heavier then 15 pounds, but heck I don't know. When
I bring her to the vet in a week I will let you know.

Joyce

The air bag imfo is an interesting consept! I sure never would have thought
of that. I just think dogs belong, and also fit better in the back. Also
we usually ride in cabs, so have no choice.
Thanks for the imfo, Greg.

I agree with Greg,if you let her always sit in the front seat, then, when it
is necessary for her to be in the back of the vehicle you'll have a tough
time getting and keeping her back there.
Sophie always rides in the back, because most of the cars that we ride in are
Hondas or Toyotas.

I did think avout sitting in the backseat with her on the ride home, but She
got off the truck and we walked over and got in the car all within maybe 2
minutes time. I thought if she got panick or something my son who was
driving could not see us in the back seat to let me know what might be going
on without recking the car. I didn't want to leave her in the back seat by
herself, so my mind did run thru all of that stuff.

Congratulations! I'm glad you now have her. This is so wonderful. With
obedience, you will have no problem keeping barking to a minimum. Consistent
correction for inappropriate barking is all it takes.

But, may I please be out of bounds and make one observation. Perhaps you
will want to consider not allowing her to be in the front area of the
vehicle especially with her head up and paws in your lap. We were cautioned
about this in guide dog school because if there were a crash and the air bag
deployed, it could be really bad. We were told that decapitations have
occurred. I know you were very very excited today. Just something to give
consideration to.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I picked up my new puppy this
morning. She was wonderful on the ride home. She sat on the floor in the
front seat with me with her front paws in my lap and her chin on my arm.

She has met Charlie and he tried playing with her this afternoon. He was
running bouncing off the furniture, running thru the rooms, but it sounded
like she was watching, but didn't choose to join in as of yet.

She is very quiet, curious walking around the house.

I don't know what I will name her yet. I have had some suggestions given to
me. Like Fawn[they tell me she is the color of a baby dear][that I picture
as a light tannish color, not yellow] I had thought of Mara as in Marigold
and then thought of Adding Princess Mara, but if she isn't yellow, then that
won't work.

I do like real girl's names. I named most of my Dachshundss real people's
names, but a few.

She is thin and needs some filling out. She is 5 months old and quiet. I
haven't had a dog that barks in my house since the Dacshunds left. I hope I
can keep it that way.

Joyce
