In my opinion it is better to purchase cheaper looms if the knitter is not
sure he wants to do loom knitting.  The Boye looms are affordable, whereas
the others are pricey.  I do not encourage anyone to purchase the better
looms until he knows they will be used often.
Many are on fixed incomes and paying $50.00 for a loom is difficult.

I just bought some Boye long looms from Amazon,they are plastic,and the pegs
are in pretty tightly. I am having no problems with the yarn getting caught
on the hooked tops.
I think that it is a matter of preference as to what knitting needle,loom,or
crochet hook works best for you.

I started looming with the knifty knitters and when I was looking to expand
my loom collection, I bought a couple of the Boye looms, and the difference
was immediately apparent. I don't think it's just about preferences, but
choosing the best quality items for my money. It's the difference between
driving a regular car versus a luxury one.
Besides the annoying crochet hook at the top of the pegs that always seem to
snag my stitches, the Boye pegs break off very easily (one of mine broke off
within a couple days of owning the thing). Also, with any hobby, there are
good looming habits that a loom knitter should observe and I feel like the
Boye looms do not promote that. Now when I have friends approach me to learn
to knit, I always point them towards the better brands out there because
there's no point in dealing with the annoyances when they could have a good
looming experience and actually enjoy the craft. Just my opinion as well.
