Hello,

I am forwarding this post from the Agriculture List. It talks about making
soap. It sounds interesting. Has anyone tried to make soap?

Michelle

Hello:

If you're really interested in making soap I suggest reading the following
book from the NLS BARD program.

Handcrafted soap DB56092
Boone, Delores. Reading time: 5 hours, 8 minutes.
Read by Patricia McDermott.

Hobbies and Crafts

Describes the hot-process method of using an indirect heat source such as a
slow cooker, an oven, or a double boiler to make luxurious soap at home.
Includes instructions for twenty-eight recipes that can be personalized by
adding oils, fragrances, and colors. 2002.

The process is pretty detailed, so I'm really not comfortable telling you
how it's done in an email. There are also some really good sources on the
internet and on youtube. If you do a search you will find all kinds of
information and recipes. I found the book to be most helpful when I was
getting started. I read it several times before actually making soap. I
also made soap with a sighted friend the first couple of times. We were
both nervous about trying it on our own.

I've been making it for several years now and am comfortable doing it. It
does require handling active lye, so you need to be very careful. The book
has a whole chapter on handling the lye safely.

You will need several supplies before getting started, many of which are
probably already in your kitchen. However you will need a good set of
scales, everything has to be weighed, measuring isn't accurate enough. You
will also need a stick blender and a large double boiler or crock pot. I
prefer using a crock pot.

Do some research and reading and then if you have questions feel free to
ask.

Also I just want you to know that making soap does not save money, it cost
much more per bar than what you purchase in a store. I enjoy making it and
I like knowing exactly what I'm putting on my body. I also sell it and give
it as gifts.

There are a couple of methods for making soap, the hot process and cold
process.
I use hot process, but know people that prefer the cold method. The book
and your online research will explain the differences. Making soap is a
chemical reaction. The correct amounts of fats, water and lye cause the
molecules to realine and form soap. It is very important to accurately
measure everything and follow directions or you can end up with something
that's not soap. You do not want any active lye left in the mixture or it
can be harmful to the skin.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Nella
