Some of you may be interested in my gord project. I was looking for
something a little decorative that would grow here, and I planted some
gords. Even though we got them in late, they grew like mad. They are
small, but they looked ready to pick, so I did. Then I wondered how to dry
them.

I heard about a gord festival at one of the hotels about ten minutes from
here, so I dragged a friend of mine there today. He thought he was doing me
a favor, but I could hardly get him to leave. He was fascinated.

There were gords of all shapes and sizes cut and decorated in many different
ways. Everybody was very friendly and informative. I even found a lady who
will plant the seeds in January in her greenhouse so I could pick them up in
the spring when it is time to put them outdoors. Then they told me you
pick them after they frost and dry them all winter. Guess I rushed that.
You dry them outside and let them sit in the rain and snow. Next spring or
summer you scrape off the mould and they will be ready to carve.

So I will plant some more next year and know more about what I am doing.

Now maybe I should have asked you all, and you could have told me everything
except, perhaps, whether this is a good climate for gords.

I bought a bag of gords of all colors and sizes for ten bucks so I can
experiment with them this fall, along with my little ones, but I will just
do simple things for now.

Ramona
