[Nfb-krafters-korner] new project: gords

Joyce, I never actually did it myself, but I had a friend who did
it on a large scale and I believe she told me they brushed the
interior frequently with a bleach solution while they were drying
in order to prevent the growth of mold. It did not effect the
outer color.

How did you soak them in bleach while they are drying???

Does the bleach have any effect on the color of them?

When I was in Michigan they used to make bird houses out of
gourds. I know
you had to soak them in bleach while they were drying.

The ones I got range in size from an inch in diameter to five
or six.
But they were selling huge gords. I saw one as high as a table
and at
least two feet in diameter. Of course, they grow in many
different
shapes, some with long tails and some are called warty, and they
are
 quite rough in different patterns.

I made a pile of them on an end table in the living room and
haven't
had a chance to find out which ones are which color, but I
understand
that they are many shades of brown, tan, yellow, and orange.
Those I grew
are green.

I will also have to find out if it is possible to guide them
into
shapes while they are still growing. I never heard of a gord
festival
before, but this was quite an interesting display, and there is
a gord
association,
 complete with tea-shirts, hats, etc.
There was a fellow demonstrating how to drill with a small bit
little
holes around the top so you could put yarn or thread through and
attach hats or other tops. There were gord candy dishes and
vases with
decorated tops.
There was one completely covered with tiny beads of many colors.
The
 beads were glued on.
You can tell that we had fun. This was all new to me. I don't
have
time to be too hooked, but it caught my interest.

Approximately what are the size of the ones you purchased at the
Festival?
If I remember right they are different colors and kinda not
large.

We just sat them around for decorations and didn't cut them.

Some of you may be interested in my gord project. I was looking
for
something a little decorative that would grow here, and I
planted some
gords. Even though we got them in late, they grew like mad.
They are
small, but they looked ready to pick, so I did. Then I wondered
how
 to dry them.

I heard about a gord festival at one of the hotels about ten
minutes
from here, so I dragged a friend of mine there today. He
thought he
was doing me a favor, but I could hardly get him to leave. He
was
fascinated.

There were gords of all shapes and sizes cut and decorated in
many
different ways. Everybody was very friendly and informative. I
even
found a lady who will plant the seeds in January in her
greenhouse so
I could pick them up in the spring when it is time to put them
outdoors. Then they told me you pick them after they frost and
dry them
all winter. Guess I rushed that.
You dry them outside and let them sit in the rain and snow.
Next
spring or summer you scrape off the mould and they will be ready
to carve.

So I will plant some more next year and know more about what I
am doing.

Now maybe I should have asked you all, and you could have told
me
everything except, perhaps, whether this is a good climate for
gords.

I bought a bag of gords of all colors and sizes for ten bucks so
I can
experiment with them this fall, along with my little ones, but I
will
just do simple things for now.

 Ramona
