I did a bird on a branch.  It was a latch hook.  My mom outlined, with stitches the bird and I filled it in.  Most of the background was white, accept the branch.
Who knows what happened to my big bird!
Plastic canvas, to me is easier, because you can design your own items.  They are usually a lot smaller than latch hooking.  You also have a working yarn, not little pieces of yarn, everywhere!

Hi Henry
I used canvas especially designed for that type of work. It is actually meant as carpets done with pure wool. I never used pure wool because of the price and also because I'm allergic to pure yarn.
I once made a tapestry with old vintage cars. A friend draw the outlines of the cars with string and I used that as a guide.

Your sail boat picture sounds beautiful. It sounds like a Latch hook kit
that I did many years ago.
I wonder if we could put braill numbers under the pins to help us follow the
pattern.

I used to work with different textured yarn and also varied the stitches
axccording to the pattern;. I hate feeling over a finished piece and not
knowing what it looks like.

This reminds me of the sail boat I once made with canvas with large holes
and short pieces of wool one twisted through the holes with a crochet--like
needle with a closing pin. The boat itself was easy but then I wanted it
anchored in deeper water. My husband helped me there to get the darker color
for deeper water and blue for the sky look right. Then I used black wool to
work the anchor like a thick chain into the water. The sails were made of
softer wool than the rest to make it tactile afterwards.
Had lots of fun and concentration.

When I was a kid, We did this in Bible School one year. We made a sail boat
with little nails and then wrapped colored twine to make the picture. II t
was really pretty. But, one hard thing is getting all of your nails exactly
the same depth and then wrapping all the string. Some were only wrapped once
or twice and some a bunch of times. For a blind person, it would require a
very simple picture. This sailboat would be an advanced level for a blind
person as a first project. The sighted kids struggled and they had a picture
to look at. So, a lot of time in planning would be required and the design
of a piece and all. We had kits back then.

Do you think it would be possible to use a screen board or raised line
drawing kit of one kind or another to show the design for the string art?
Do you wrap the string around several times?  Is the end result attractive?

The project you describe with the string art sounds familiar to me. I know I
made something like that but can't remember what it is. In a way it is like
creating a maze with string. I do believe a blind person could do something
like this if they wanted to do so. However, sighted help would be needed to
place the tee pin or whatever on the dots for the picture.

No, no, no, I am not prepared to teach such a class. <grin>  but I would
give it a try if someone else wanted to take on the challenge of figuring
out how to teach it.
