Bill,
Well, Skype works kind of like instant messaging, but you can also use your voice. Basically, in addition to speakers or headphones, you need to plug a small microphone into the microphone port of your computer. After you download the software, Skype will ask you to register by providing your full name, your email address, and then a username and a password and another space to re-enter your password to make sure it is correct. Skype then checks to make sure your username is not already registered to someone else.
If it is already in use, then it provides a list of similar nicknames that are available with radio buttons next to each name and permits you to check one of the suggested names similar to the one you wanted or you can type in a completely different name. It then checks the skype system again and if all is okay, it registers your information. Next, a screen appears, allowing you to enter information you may wish to make available to others
you may contact regarding the country, state, and/or city you live in,
etc. There is also a field where you can write information about yourself such as interests, etc. After entering the info you want others to know, or just leaving it all blank, Skype asks if you want it to search your email address book to see if some of the email addresses in your address book are also registered Skype users. If you select this option, then it presents you with a list of names in your book with their Skype usernames and if you click on one of them it will give you the opportunity to send a message to that person that you want their permission to be able to contact them on Skype and add them to a list of Skype contacts on your computer.

Anyway, that is kind of the basics for installing Skype. The software is free and there is no cost to call other Skype users anywhere else in the world if they are also using Skype. You can either use text or your voice to talk to them, You can also call phone numbers from Skype at very reduced rates. For instance, you can call anywhere in the United States for about 2-cents a minute using pre-paid credits by buying time on Skype for calling standard telephone numbers and mobile phones. If you are making local calls, there is no cost. You can also pay for your own Skype phone number that people can call from their phones or mobile phones for about five bucks a month - or 60 per year.

Hope this helps.
