Courtney,

with the looms, the weight of the yarn you use will depend on what the length of spacing is between the pegs. for example, the knifty knitter or similar looms have a spacing that is large about 3/4 inches, so you would want to use a super-bulky(6-ply yarn) or a bulky (5-ply) yarn with those looms. you can also use a medium or (4-ply) worsted weight yarn and use two strands as one. if you were to use only one strand of worsted weight in the large gauge looms I am now describing, then the project would have a lacy look with large holes in it.

there are looms you can purchase with smaller spacing between the pegs so that you can use the one strand  worsted weight or dk weight yarn with them. but for a beginner loom knitter I suggest you stick with the basic round or long looms with the wide peg spacing.
