I also did candle art similar to sand art and I would take sirann wrap  and
crunch it up and put it in the top of the jar.  Then put the top on it with
tape around the jar and top it off with a bow.  As the kids made this at the
craft shows I would be at and I would slap a label pround ones] on the
bottom of the jar which read:

Made by Me!

The kids would walk around holding their treasures and the other kids would
get Mom or Grandmas to find me so they could make them too.

This is something I did for a business after I went blind.  I love
interacting with the kids and I had a friend that would watch the kids
working on their candles and collect the money from the adults.

The one suggestion I would have...

If you want the layers to stay and not get mixed until the recipient stirs
the ingredients...

You need to fill the jar to the very top so it is completely full.  So that
you need to press on the lid to close it.  

This will keep the ingredients from shifting around in transit.

I use to do sand art...

We would make layers of different color sand.  Then you could take the tip
of a toothpick, or pencil and push down in the sand along the edge of the
jar.  This would make v shapes in the layers.  It was really pretty, it
could look like mountains  or landscapes by how the sand was layered and the
vs were made.

I would think that the same technique could be used with the layers of
ingredients for this.  But, again, it needs to be tightly filled to keep the
layers from shifting and losing the effect.

In the directions you would tell them to remove all ingredients and stir
thoroughly.  Then to serve mix so much with the hot water to make a serving.

OK you are being not allowing for participation.  So now hear me out.

Work on maker's end:

Be creative layer your jar and then add some decorations to make it quite
Festive.

Receiver's participation:  They get to try to spoon in and get all areas,
they get to sit there and stir this all up themselves or they could dump it
out or put it in a larger jar and shake it.

Why do we have to do all the work?

I think they would have to mix it up all together or you would not get the
right amount in each spoonful.

I have heard of this chocolate coffee jar thingy, but opinion please, what
if you layered each one a little amount or a lot so it would look pretty
with the browns and white  and on your note tell folks to dig down deep to
get all the flavors or just mix it up!???

That way it would look more interesting when presented as a gift.

Here is a recipe that would be good for a mason jar.

Swiss Mocha Mix

2 cups Swiss Miss Cocoa
1 cup instant coffee
2 cups non-dairy creamer
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly.  Store mixture in a covered
container.  Add 3 to 4 tsps mixture to 1 cup hot water.  This makes 4 cups
of mocha mix.

You could change the flavor some by using flavored coffees or creamers.
