Annely, you were lucky to have a teacher who did that. Some kids handle it okay, but backwards makes most people struggle.

Hi,
I remember that using the word "backward" was a no no. When I was in elementary school and one of my classmates was learning to write with the slate and stylus, I piped up and said "it's like writing backward" and my teacher gently but firmly said we don't use that word. I'll never forget that.

One of my soapboxes is to
get teachers ( all of them) to think of dots one two and three as the first side of the cell and four five six as the second side of the cell. Then starting at the other end of the slate does not change the progression of the Braille. Then you only have to keep track of the end of the line where you start. Everything else is in progression. It seems pretty simple to me. And I have never had a student who couldn't understand this if somebody had not already confused them with some other approach.

Joyce, I either
heard of someone working on something like that or it is out there. Or, maybe that is in my dreams. That is why it is so important to learn the dot combinations when you learn braille. When you use the slate and styllus dots 1, 2 and 3 are on the right. It really made it easier for me to use it when I changed how I thought of the slate and styllus. I am still not the greatest but I can get the job done.
