I never thought of adding the cheese either.  I make it without the port
because I don't eat meat.

I just love black eyed peas and like any excuse to eat them. Lol

That's similar to my recipe. Never thought of the cheese.

The hoppin' John is said to bring good luck for the new year. For riches,
serve up some turnip, mustard, or collard greens or cabbage.
