[Nfb-krafters-korner] Didn't have surgery

A Diabetic Division of NFB already exists. Cindy, instead of classes, ask
your doctor to prescribe a one on one with a Diabetes Educator so they can
actually go over with you and spend the time talking about you and not some
general big class. My doctor did this right off. I wasn't even offered a
class. Most insurance will pay for this periodically and if your doctor
advocates to the insurance that one on one is required, due to disability,
they will probably pay for more.
As for Joyce, information isn't what she needs. She already has the
knowledge. She is doing exactly the right thing by seeing her
endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes and such disorders. The
endocrinologist and the surgeon and the whole team will have to coordinate
and be talking and creating a plan. The problem seems to be that the doctors
are not talking. She may have to be hospitalized for a day or something and
monitored closely so they can adjust just so to keep her safe. They may need
to some how change the usual routine of presurgery by somehow insuring she
is getting enough but not to much insulin and carbs and sugars and all.
Also, because any surgery puts our body in stress and any stress can sure
upset the insulin and glucose balance, an aftercare plan needs to be in
place. For someone who is alone a lot, they may require a overnight stay
after surgery or have the requirement that someone is available to provide
their care. Pain meds make us not think clearly. We need someone who can
rescue us if things get crazy. As patients, we have to advocate for
ourselves and that may mean telling doctors to consult, telling our person
who takes us to the hospital to watch everything and let you know if
something seems odd. For example, when Joyce was given a diet coke, she may
have to start saying what is this or her driver may have to say you just
said her sugar is low so why are you giving her diet coke which has no
sugar? So she can pass out on the way home with me? Then, when the nurses
come in to give meds, ask what every last one is and if they won't tell you,
insist. No organization can do our self advocacy for us. We or our
representative must do it for ourselves. This is nothing to do with
blindness really. Sighted people have to have their advocates too who don't
mind to question. There are standard protocols all hospitals and doctors use
and they are becoming more and more standardized every day. It supposedly
protects them. And, for some of us, we just aren't standard or ordinary. We
break every rule there is for their protocols. Then we need an altered
protocol that everyone understands and somebody then has to watch to make
sure that altered protocol is being done.

Check with the NFB and see what material they have. I know they have or are
creating a diabetic division. Check with Sharon Maneki from MD. Not sure
if it was state wide or division wide.

Good luck to both of you.

FYI,
The diabetes education classes are NOT accessible They talk through about
half the material but you are sent home with printed material and the
customized portion is only in printed material. I asked about digital
versions and was told that is not available (they get it off a computer so I
really don't understand why they can't make it accessible to me).
They keep asking me to take these classes and I have begged them to put it
in the file that it is NOT accessible.
All of my education is done from what I can find online to educate myself.
And the biggest problem we have is that you can find renal diets and
diabetic diets but not a combination so you still have to do it on your own.
(FYI, renal diets will put diabetics in a coma.)

That is what I am seriously thinking about.
Right now I don't want any surgery done until I get in pthis Thursday at 2
PM] to see my endocrinologist and then March 1 go back to my medical doctor.

Joyce, this is terrible. Can you find another doctor and hospital?

I am back, but will take a few days off. I went in for the surgery and my
blood sugar was too low, so they sent me home. I did get a bit excited as
the surgeon came in and said well we will just sweeten her up a bit. He
went out and the anesthiologist or whatever she is came back to say she
refuses to do it. I said start an IV and give me some glucose. She
refused. She wanted the nurse to get me something before I left. I had put
my jacket on and was about to walk out of the room and the nurse came
running in and handed me a small can. I took it and walked out and while
walking down the hall I asked my son what was it a can of? Hee told me diet
Coke. Now they are all idiots and I don't think I will go there for surgery
for anything. They all need a lesson in diabetes. I am sure I wasn't the
first diabetic that has walked in their door for surgery.
