Wasn't the name of the magazine called the voice of the Diabetic? or was 
that the newsletter?

Greg,  that was a great email you sent about having advocates.  Everyone 
needs someone, whether they are older, disabled,or whatever age group.  2 
pairs of ears and 2 brains are better than one.  The patient is so busy 
trying to process everything they are hearing that they don't hear 
everything being said.  When dealing with my parents or my husband with 
their medical stuff, it was hard.  When my husband suffered his brain 
injury, I had a digital recorder that I used faithfully to record 
information given by doctors and nurses and then I don't think I got it all. 
Even when I was in the hospital for 3 days, I know I missed some things. 
I'm sure the doctors and nurses cringed when they saw me because I was that 
person who asked a lot of questions: explain medications, treatments, 
procedures, etc.  I even asked a doctor to call me and explain my husband's 
insulin regimen because they couldn't get his fasting blood sugars down 
below 200 and most of the time they were in the upper 300's.  The doctor 
sounded annoyed on the phone, but he increased the insulin and got my 
husband's blood sugars down.  I'm sure it was stress because he was waiting 
for clearance, in the hospital,  for bypass surgery;  very stressful.  But 
because he had better control, he never developed an infection and was out 
of the hospital 2 weeks after surgery.  I think that's awesome for a 
diabetic.  Yes, EVERYONE needs an advocate.  There are too many errors being 
made.  That's enough from me.

Yes, I remember that newsletter and
the group.  I wondered what happened to it.  I
know ACB has diabetics In Action, but I've not kept up with
them either.

  monirators on the email list for the Diabetic division
  when
  the email list first got started and
  that went down the drain, too.  The
  newsletter with all the great articles which
  was being distributed through
  out the world
  was stopped because of costing NFB too much money to print
  and
  distribute.  It definitely was a
  resource for information for Diabetics.  Ed
  Brient was the President and editor of the
  Diabbetic division and magazine.

  The times I
  have talked with the president of the division, they do
not
  do
  much outside of national convention. I
  was able to talk with him regarding a
  talking meter but they no longer have a
  division newsletter or magazine.

  creating a diabetic division.  Check
  with Sharon Maneki from MD.  Not sure

  FYI,

  The diabetes education classes
  are NOT accessible They talk through about
  half the material but you are sent home with
  printed material and the
  customized portion
  is only in printed material. I asked about digital
  versions and was told that is not available
  (they get it off a computer so I
  really
  don't understand why they can't make it accessible
  to me).

  They keep asking me
  to take these classes and I have begged them to put it
  in the file that it is NOT accessible.

  All of my education is done
  from what I can find online to educate myself.
  And the biggest problem we have is that you can
  find renal diets and
  diabetic diets but not
  a combination so you still have to do it on your own.
  (FYI, renal diets will put diabetics in a
  coma.)

  I am back, but will
  take a few days off.  I went in for the surgery and my
  blood sugar was too low, so they sent me
  home.    I did get a bit excited as
  the
  surgeon came in and said well we will just sweeten her up
a
  bit.  He
  went out and the anesthiologist or
  whatever she is came back to say she
  refuses
  to do it.  I said start an IV and give me some glucose.
  She
  refused.  She wanted the nurse to get
  me something before I left.  I had put
  my
  jacket on and was about to walk out of the room and the
  nurse came
  running in and handed me a small
  can.  I took it and walked out and while
  walking down the hall I asked my son what was
  it a can of?  Hee told me diet
  Coke.  Now
  they are all idiots and I don't think I will go there
  for surgery
  for anything.  They all need a
  lesson in diabetes.  I am sure I wasn't the
  first diabetic that has walked in their door
  for surgery.
