[Nfb-krafters-korner] Attention Crochet people

I really am offended by the discussion here. I do not wrap yarn around my 
hand and do feel of my work. There is nothing wrong with my tension or 
stitches and I do sell my work to the public. To say that I can't do a 
double crochet correctly like this is an insult Joyce. I know the origin of 
this conversation also. Someone and they know who they are said they were 
having problems and asked how I do it. I advised them that I would tell them 
only if they not share because I did not want to interfere with Terry's 
class. Within hours, this conversation came up and I also know that that 
person and Terry talked. If this is the group you claim to be, why are you 
putting people down for their efforts? Why are you saying one way is better 
than another? I am blind. I do things differently some times and I resent it 
being referred to as the "blind way". I also cook not by sight but by smell, 
feel, and even taste. I guess you want me to stop cooking the "blind way" 
too? Hell no! I'll do things my way whatever that is and honestly begin to 
wonder if the people who claim to be supportive of all are really what they 
claim to be.

Joyce, I totally agree with you.  I have used the small thread, but, my
projects were not as pleasing to me as I would have wished.  This method
makes the stitches more uniform and much easier to work.  I will never go
back to the "blind"" way of crocheting.  I have to confess that I have been
teaching the "blindd" method; because that is the only thing I knew.

I have used from crocheting lace on pillow cases with crochet thread up to
thick thick bulky yarn and all the ones in between and this is how I was
taught by my Grandmother back when I was hmmm 6 or 7 years old.  When I
owned my yarn shop hmm 41 years ago, this is also the way I ttaught
crocheting and this was the way it was described in all of the crochet books
I had.

I might understand a sighted person describing that this is the "Blind way
to crochet", but do you drink a glass of water different then a sighted
person drinks it?  I can also understand someone teaching it with your
fingers so you understand what the yarn and hook is doing and how it is
creating the chain, but that is a poor teacher not to teach you the correct
way, using the correct tools and methods to do it.

I totally understand Terry's thoughts on this as if you want to learn the
more advanced stitches in crocheting you need to learn how to crochet the
correct way, holding the yarn and making the stitches with the hook.
Example" when you have 3 or 4 loops on that hook and you need to yarn over
and pull thru 2 loops, yarn over and pull thru 2 loops and yarn over and
pull thru the last 2 and that is to do 1 stitch.  I can not imagine you
taking the yarn off your hand for each one of those and wrapping it back on
your hand to do it and keep all those loops on the hook and on top of all
that work with the average size hook [G H I ]

So you do need to practice, practice, practice and get into the groove of
the yarn flowing over and thru your hand holding and keeping an even tension
with your pointer figure and just twisting your right hand from 9 PM
position turning the hook facing downward so the yarn will slip into the
groove of the hook neck and pull it toward your right so it will go thru the
loop.

Terry, just for curiosity, do you crochet with the small cotton thread?  I
think this method may be better for the small thread.

It has been brought to my attention that a disservice has been taught to the
low vision and blind community. If this has been passed or taught to you,
will you please let me know so we can speak about it. If you crochet and
have been taught the quote Blind method, please let me know. It is not
wrong, or it is depending on how you look at it. I am offending at it for
what I have learned and want to address this misconcept.

A vision impaired person Can crochet the same as a fully sighted person. You
can read any lesson on teaching crochet and do it the same way. Just because
there is a disability here there is not a exceptjion or change in the
learning. If you have been taught to use you fingers, that you have to use a
larger hook or larger yarn, to be able to crochet, it is not true. There is
No terms in crochet that teach you to Throw Your Yarn. It is not there. If
you have been taught this way I want you to know you can do this craft just
like everyone else. You can use normal hook sizes and doe patterns. Please
email or post on list. If this is a makes problems, you do not have to
change, but if you would like to learn the skill so that you can do the many
stitches that are difficult to do with your fingers, please speak up. If you
are happy doing what you are doing now, please continue I just want to know
how many have been taught this way and how we can help you  learn a
different method.T
