[Nfb-krafters-korner] List is slow So I will complain

Greg,
I appreciate your comments. I also respectfully agree to disagree, nicely. I
do understand your comments and I approach them from both sides. I have been
a Teacher on many occasions. It is difficult to take time to prepare and
then teach when no one shows up. As a college class, the material is
prepared and the ones that sign up usually are the ones who want to learn
the subject. Results everyone wins. This is my personal choice. I understand
we still need email classes for those in other times and places. I also
understand that there are many who only want to get patterns and do the
skill later. That is fine also. Whatever it takes for that person is fine
with me. You make me sound like a selfish restricted teacher, with do it my
way. So I will let my comments stand. I believe I am what people call the
old generation and we have to make room for the change and the new, but I
ask How that has been working for our time. Well, will get off the soap box
that is why there is vanilla and strawberry.

Terry K,

While I understand your frustration, there are a couple issues here. First,
the NFB Crafter's Division strongly promotes itself as a place for all
including international members and participation. The group also has
classes as the focus of the whole group. So, if these facts are true, then
not offering e-mail classes is a contradiction of group values. It is
unreasonable to think that people can always take your class by phone. We
have three time zones right in this country not to mention international.

Second, to insist that a student come spend time with you and a dozen chit
chatting folks in order to get access to a pattern that they are definitely
capable of doing on their own is disrespectful to that student. By being in
your class, it does not insure that I won't do exactly what you say e-mail
classes do. I have sat through classes totally bored and then once I had the
instructions completed the project in just a few minutes. So, instead of one
who shares information in an accessible form, are you saying that you would
prefer to be a babysitter? I personally think I'd rather share information
and knowledge. Even if a member does not actually stitch the project you
taught, did that person learn something? I can learn a lot by simply reading
a pattern.

As a final note, attitude is so important. When instructors have an attitude
of I worked hard and you owe me it sure comes across to the students and not
as much learning occurs. The alternative is for an instructor to teach
because of their love of teaching and to have a positive attitude of I know
there's something to learn from any instructor even teaching the same
project but in their own way. I always look to learn some new idea, some new
technique, or some new project I want to make. That choice is up to me.
Maybe a person uses shower gel at their house. Just because they have no use
for a soap bag, do you really want to deny them the privilege of learning
something because they use shower gel and have no use for that one project?
I'm sure you chose that project because you felt it would teach a useful
skill. But, denying students that pattern, you denied them that skill too.

You are a loving kind person who has a lot to contribute. Terry, if you
don't want to teach, simply don't do it.
Your teaching is being affected by an attitude of I'll teach you if you do
it my way and when I say. Oh yeah, don't forget to be thankful that so many
classes are available to you because of me in part. I doubt that is the
image you want to portray.

I have to voice my opinion. I know others will not agree, but that is why
Beyer's makes many flavors, so bear with me. June was the first time in 8
years I have even taught an email class and I did not like it at all. So for
all my past students, Sorry, I will not do it again. I like hearing all
those voices behind the class line and getting the feeling that some of you
did not understand or get my instructions. I like hearing the comments and
other people who give me their opinions or other ideas on how to do it
differently. I know after the class I got to speak with new members and hear
the voices of those I only speak with on list. I understand this is the new
world and most people like this, but I just Do Not. I will teach the market
bag by email but reconsidering the little girl purse in August, have not
make decision yet. I always follow up my class with written instructions but
I personally feel that most people only take the email class to save and
file it for later and that becomes a UFO also. Most of you do not realize
how much time is taken to write and try to print the lesson with all the
turns and twist just to put it on list and have it filed. I believe it is
like writing a book, your patterns get put into a shelf and never looked at
unless needed. So, if you want to do a craft and I am presenting it you will
have to come to class and learn it at that time. I will try to keep my
classes to the one to one and one half hour time and I will try to keep them
fun and enjoyable for all, but, sorry, no more email classes for me.
