[Nfb-krafters-korner] Farm and Work

Hi Terry,

Good for you. Yeah, it's a shame that we have to prove ourselves to employers. But for many jobs, sighted people have to do that, too. that's why they have probationary periods for usually 90 days. It just seems like we have to do it more so than others.

I work for the National Cancer Institute of the National
 Institute of Health.
I am an audimation clerk.  I started out just doing
phones, but have proved to the government that a blind
person can do much more than phones.
I escort, Xerox, scan, take passports back and forth to main
campus, on our shuddle bus, go to the cashier on campus,
make deliveries here and some times on campus, maintain copy
machines on 2 floors and much more.  I am always
looking for new things to try.
We even came up with a way for me to help with filing for
about 5 years.  We used a cover page and jumbo print
and they would put check marks, so I knew what to do with
 the document.

 Terry:

My farm is quite small, just a few acres.

I have one horse, his name is Cruiser and he is a Missouri
Fox Trotter.  He is a palomino color and very
sweet.  He will be 14 in June and a lot of fun to
 ride.

I keep a small herd of Nubian goats and sell their milk and
the kids I don't wish to keep.  Nubians have long
floppy ears, like hound dogs and can come in lots of
 different colors.  All the goats have candy names;
right now I'm milking Lollipop, Carmel, Tootsie Roll and
 Skittles.

I added a Jersey cow to the farm last October.  Her
name is Bonnie and she is due to calf any day now.  I
sell her milk and will be selling her calf when it is old
 enough.

I make and sell goat milk soap.  I make cheeses, but
legally can't sell them.  Some of my milk clients will
give donations for cheese.  It is the same way with
butter.  My farm is only certified to sell milk.

I have planted a small orchard, but will not get any fruit
for 2 or 3 more years.  Someday I hope to be able to
sell some fresh fruit.  I also have a small herb and
vegetable garden, but they are for my own use.  I do
use some of the herbs in my soaps.

Well, that is about all that goes on around here.  I
spend most of my life cleaning the milking equipment,
sterilizing jars and the like.  It's really not very
 exciting.

I would love to hear about what other people do.

 Nella

 Henry:

I have just 1 Jersey cow and she gives the best cream.
I am waiting for her to calf so will not have milk from her
until then.  It should be any day now.

Her name is Bonnie and she has quite the following.  I
have people who buy her milk just for their coffee.
Several people buy milk just so they can make butter.

The goats have their fan club to; many people have
difficulty digesting cow milk, but do not have trouble with
goat milk.  I like both and use what ever doesn't
sell.  I love making goat cheeses.

 Good Morning Nella;
Do you have milk cows on your farm too?
There's nothing better to me than a glass of milk straight
from the cow, and the cream that rises to the top, oh boy
now that is Heaven in coffee or tea.

I have found a new use for my hot bath canner.

I've been sterilizing the jars I use for goat milk in it.

Or use tools. In canning, there is a rack with a handle
where you place in the pot to hold jars in position.

     Catherine,

This is a great example. If a sighted person had a jar to
fall over in a boiling canner, this would be difficult for
them as well! It can be done safely but is going to involve
cooling that whole pot down some and using jar tongs and
another lifting tool like a huge spoon or another pair of
tongs to grab it with both hands. And, if a person is
limited in their abilities or doesn't feel comfortable, you
call a sighted friend or if you were a sighted person, you
call your Mama or a friend and say now what do I do lol. So,
we all need to know our comfort zone. I don't like dealing
with the pressure canner. So, I'll break green beans all
day, wash dishes, and all the rest. But, I get a helper to
help with the canner for a share of the beans.

Yum, dill pickles!  Easy to make.  Well in
comparison to the 7 day sweet pickles that my Mom used to
make.  For the dills;  the clean hot  mason
jars (full of cuucs and other stuff) are filled to near top
with brine.  Using a liquid alert on side of jar makes
this doable for me.  After sealing the jar,  place
it in the canner for processing. .  I’ve done canning
/ preserving, mainly peaches, pears and apricots and the
utensils that go with this process makes it again
doable.  The exception for me is when a jar falls over
in the canner filled with hot water.  very difficult to
 get out.
It is an all day job with lots of pouring of hot brine. .
I no longer do the canning as we do not eat that much fruit
and we are in Mexico for the winter.  I have done some
selsa type preserves, but they are in small jars.
 > I’ll have to look up the kool-aid pickles.  Our
 family loves pickles.

 cuucs; phonetic abbreviation for cucumbers.
