[Nfb-krafters-korner] sewing machines

Nella,
I bought a really good magnetic seam gauge at joann's It is very hard to
move once positioned. You can still buy the kind that Linda mentioned as
well. I know Maxi aids sells them. I have a Brother machine which is very
simple. It has a dial to turn for stitch selection and a small wheel for
needle tension. I currently make quilts, but would love to learn to make
clothes.

Linda:

It seems like many of the new machines are all computerized and I'm afraid
that will make them harder to use without sight. The push buttons would be
nice.

My old machine had a seam gage that had a screw that you could loosen and
then slide it back and forth. I used a friends machine and the seam gage
was just a magnet. I kept bumping it and it would move.

Do you know if you can still get the machines with the screw seam gage?

I used to have a very basic Sears Kenmore machine, but sold it several years
ago and have been kicking myself ever since. Lol It was very basic, just
did a straight and sigzag stich, but worked very well.

Nella, I am thrilled with your motivation. It is so refreshing to see
someone eager to try new things. I know that Joyyce and I sew. Jill is
quilting. Jill, Joyce and I tried machines at a sew machine shop. We each
found one we liked. I have not seen the ones Jill and Joyce have, but, they
do sound similar to mine. Mine has push buttons on the right side to select
the stitches. It has an automatic threader, thread cutter, and the option
to use a pettle or not. This option is for those who cannot push the
pettle. I always use a seam gage. Someone trims and marks my patterns for
me. If I know I am going to use a pattern repeatily, like dolls clothes, I
will cut the pattern out of heavy innerfacing, which lengthens the life of
the pattern. It is easier for me to use the inner facing a multiple times
than the tissue pattern. Good luck with your new venture.

Hello:

I'm curious about how many of you sew?

Also what kind of sewing machines are you using?

I used to do some sewing; things like curtains, throw pillows and simple
clothing. I haven't done it in a long time and am thinking about getting a
basic machine. I would love to know what kind of machines people are using
and what you would recommend to a person who is starting over again?

I look forward to your feedback.

Good Morning Nella and Linda B.;
I agree with the both of you.
The key to success is to keep on trying, and if you find out that a certain
method doesn't work for you, then try another way and don't give up until you
find a way that does work for you.
I feel that if a person trys to discourage you, it's only because they can't
do what you want to do, and they don't want to see you be better than they
are when you accomplish that project.
Nella, don't forget that we loom teachers (myself included )are here and
ready to help you wwhen and if you need it, just reach out to us.

This is such a good point. I've made candles before, but most likely won't
do it again. I enjoy making my own soap and think I get a better quality
than any I can buy. I'm having fun trying the knitting looms and will
probably try the cro hooking. There are so many things to learn and try
there's no way I can do it all, but I want to be able to make informed
decisions and get good information when needed.

If people have a desire to learn something then they should do the research
and give it a try. You can never know until you do it.

I want to make pickles some day. Lol

Greg, at my age, I like taking short cuts. If younger folks want to make
candles, I think they should learn all they can. Hey, I am for giving
everything a try! I made pickles years ago; now, I think commercial pickles
are wonderful. We should learn something new each day. If we learn the
basic construction of a craft and never make it, it is okay; we have learned
something. Like Courtney, I love the candle warmers for their fraquence
choices, as well as, the cost. I have even mixed the fraquences, which is
fun. If someone wants to make candles, I encourage him or her to make them.
Folks, try what you are interested in. You don't know what you can achieve
until you try it. Do not be discouraged.

That is exactly where I'm at too. I'm with Linda B. Way to much work and
expense in candlemaking for me. But, I'm really glad I now have some idea of
how and the knowledge that I believe and even know I could do it safely. I
love that machine Linda B described! One function this group can be is to be
like the library. They have books on all sorts of topics. Most I'll never
actually do. But, I can learn how it's done and so on. I don't want to
rebuild an engine to speed up my white cane. But, I could learn how if I
wanted to and could even tell somebody else at least generally how.

Hi Greg;
Very, very well said. I whole heartily agree with all of your points.
I do believe that the other person that recently spoke of how to make
candles has many many years of both knowledge and experience in this field
of crafting.
I want to say to this person to not be discouraged in the craft of candel
making because of the negative remarks of others.
Joyce, I want to join Greg in thanking you for your mini lesson on how to
make candels. I may never attempt this craft, but, at least I know the
process of how to do it.

So, did you need to ask all of those questions? Do you think you could do
the class? Did you ask for an opportunity to speak with the instructor
yourself and sell him/her on the idea that you could benefit at least to
some degree? And, if all else failed, did you contact the store manager or
A.C. Moore corporate to state your case? Nobody has shown why you can't take
this class. Therefore, you are being excluded due to lack of understanding
and information. Notice I am saying state your case. So many blind people
might try to force the issue. But, what you need is information first. That
little old lady they hired off the street doesn't understand how a blind
person can do anything most likely. We're so remarkable you know. We can
talk and walk and chew gum lol. Also, could you call the store and get
general information about this class? Talk to the manager about reasonable
accommodation. Maybe you can bring someone with you to assist at no
additional fee to get them seeing that you are competent and capable.

Terry K, It is true that information is shared here. But, there is always
someone trying to shut down any conversation. Wait till we teach a class.
Don't talk about that on list till we can teach a class and hope you can
attend. Don't talk about that because you could get burned. Don't share
patterns or instructions so we can teach a class. And, many times, a person
does not need to sit through a class to do a project where they need only
have the pattern because they already know the technique. That class time
could better be used teaching new people basic technique. Also, by forcing
classes, it is simply to hard to get a date and the procedure is not teacher
friendly. I have told Joyce why I will not teach classes months out. When I
taught my two beading classes, we were being told we desperately need
classes for March. I agreed to teach. I finally said give me two dates
because everything I asked for was taken. Now, we want teachers for June,
July and August. I can't plan to be available for certain that far out. So,
I'll never be teaching another class here. So, as a group, you just elected
to give up any knowledge that I have. So be it. We need to just relax and
share or we need to stop saying help each other and learn from each other
and call ourselves a blind crafting school and just have classes.

Hey Greg,
Need your input on this one. Went to AC Moore the other day and was real
interested in taking one of their classes. Started asking all kinds of
questions and they told me Take the class, to make it short. Then when they
realized I was blind told me they did not think I would be able to do the
class. They discouraged me from taking the class and wanted to check with
the teacher. They would not answer my questions and I guess they would have
taken my $25 for the class I could not do. We certainly get a lot more on
this list then most places.

We are all adults. We have to make decisions about what is safe for
ourselves based on our abilities and limitations. Some people I know
shouldn't be turned lose with a plastic canvas needle. They might poke their
eyes out. Then they could join this group I guess. Are we here to share
knowledge and help people learn or are we here to tell people wait till we
think you can handle the knowledge? Joyce, thank you for sharing since I did
learn and my goodness. My hot water is hotter than the wax. So, I don't
think I'd get cooked lol.

Joyce,
Too much info...Are you teaching a class on line? This was a lot of answers
here, all of this has it all swimming in my head and I am a seasoned
crafter. Candle making is a craft that as you know can be most dangerous
with Hot wax and really studied for a sighted person and tricky for a vision
impaired person. You really know how to do this well I would caution advice
given to anyone on hot wax crafting without hands on class or emails one on
one.
Just my non important opinion.

I used double boilers or a double boiler system like an inch or 2 of water
in a saucepan with the pouring pot placed in the center. I did not use
anything under the pouring pot.

I used a wooden spoon to keep stering the wax. I bought the one poor wax
by the case or when starting out 11 pound slabs. I cut it with a butter
knife and weighed it according to the size of the jar or container I was
going to poor it in. I had gotten a talking food scale and would measure in
grams. I paid over $100 for the talking scale. If you want to know the
name of the brand of scale send me a note off list with your other
questions.

I preferred purchasing the wax in cases of 55 pounds. You got 5 - 11 pound
slabs.

I used cotter pins that were 4 or 5 inches long to hold the wix in place at
the top of the jars. I used the wix with the metal disk on the bottom and
would put some wax on it and put it into the jar and push it down. You
could feel it with your fingers if it was centered at the bottom. My
husband would put the wix in the cotter pin and use masking tape to secure
the cotter pins to the top of the jar. If you don't secure the wix in place
with the cotter pin which will hold it up straight the wix could shift and
not be in the center.

I would have to do some looking to find where I got the long cotter pins
-that was a trick I learned from a candlemaker in PA that told me a lot of
info and I first got the 11 pound slabs of wax from her.

The one pour wax is soft and more like butter. It melts at around 120 - 130
degrees. I use to pour in the afternoon and leave them sit until before I
went to bed or the next morning. It will harden from the outside of the jar
to the center wick area.

Joyce
Too many questions. This will keep you thinking for now.

Candlemaking Questions

Dear Crafters,

Looks like I may be venturing into candlemaking a bit sooner than planned
due to an oppertunity that's popped up over here, but I had a few questions
for blind candlemakers first.

I wanted to know how you candlemakers measure your hot wax when pouring it
into a container or a mold if making wax tarts, bars or cubes. I've read on
Lonestar that you shouldn't fill the container up past the widest part of
the jar, but how do you tell where that is for yourselves? Do you just use
smaller jars and liquid level indicaters?
Could an LLI even take that kind of heat? I like larger jar candles myself,
and would not wish to be limited to a certain size due to this.

Another question. When wicking your containers. To ensure centering, do any
of you use wick-centering tools? If so, which would you recommend and do you
find they work for you? Also, do you use wick stickers, glue dots, or
another method of making certain the wick adheres to the bottom of the
container?

When it comes to cutting one pour wax, if that is what you use, what tools
do you use to do it? Or do you just get wax pellets, shavings or however
else they're sold?

What is a wick bar? I think I get the idea, but physically, what does it
look like and what is it for? You have the wick centering tool, if you use
it, and then a wick bar which instructions say to affix as one of the final
steps. It comes off, of course, but what is it actually for?

Same with wick tabs. What are they used for?

I can google all of this as well. I just figured I'd ask here.

Oh, one more question. Do you use double boilers or a double boiler system
like an inch of water in a saucepan with the pouring pot placed in the
center, elevated upon a metal trivet or an inexpensive metal cookie cutter?

Thanks for all your help!

Rena
