[Nfb-krafters-korner] learn to make braille drawings

I have created braille drawings by laying a sheet of paper on a piece of card board; and drawing lines with a tracing wheel. I have used this method to mark my sewing patterns. A tracing wheel is a sewing tool.

Hi all,
I have done quite a few Braille drawings over this past year, but I haven’t yet progressed to creating my own with one exception. Before I knew there were other Braille pictures that could be made, I used to make a profile of a house, and I tried to show when the house had more than 1 floor, for example, a 2-story house, and most of the time, people could recognize it for what it was. I haven’t taken the time to create directions for it though. When drawing them, I would start from the bottom up. I don’t have much experience with tactile pens, colored or not. I have a tactile graphics kit for free-form or template drawing, but that uses plastic paper. I haven’t tried using that paper with my brailler, but when you use the drawing pad, it holds the paper in place so it won’t wrinkle, and then you can take a regular pen and draw raised lines with it. If you have pens with different colored ink, it’ll show up well on the clear plastic paper. I do have another little-known alternative. This device is from Japan, and is called the Pico Pen. It lets you draw raised lines by applying melted wax to the paper. As you press the tip of the pen against your paper, it forms raised lines, but before you can feel them, you need to wait 20 seconds or so for it to dry. They’re currently not selling them in the U.S, but I contacted the company that made them, explaining that I was an art major. At that time, I was about to enter into a 2-dimensional design class at my college, so I was on the lookout for any tactile drawing tool I could use. You can use different colors of wax with the Pico Pen, so that may be another way to color a Braille picture. I hope to be able to attend the NFB convention one day, and if anyone is interested in the pen, I could bring a few units with me so people could try it out. I currently have 3 in my possession. I’m planning to use them at a local elementary school that has a good VI program in place.
I know there is another kind of thick paper that lets you draw raised lines with a marker, but I can’t remember what it’s called. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific, but perhaps if that paper were thin enough to be inserted into a brailler, you could Braille out your picture and then take scented colored markers and color in whatever aspects you wish. I think the paper reacts to moisture. It’s like a dry sponge. When you wet the paper, or in this case, use a marker, it expands wherever the moisture was applied. The drawback to that is of course that the marker may dampen the braille lines if used heavily in one spot.
I’m curious to see what a celtic cross looks like. I can make a regular, very blocky cross on the brailler, but I’d like to make it at least a little more stylized.
If anyone would like the Braille drawings from Edith West’s entries, go to http://www.pathstoliteracy.org/blogs/edith-west <http://www.pathstoliteracy.org/blogs/edith-west>. I’d also be willing to send the files I have, which include Edith West’s drawings, some posted by Perkins, and the Marie Porter book. I have them in PDF on my mac and text on my Braille Note, and a few of them are in .doc format.
Has anyone else here on list created their own Braille drawings?
One last question: Has anyone ever thought of creating a dropbox for Krafter’s Korner for those who would like to share craft related files as in the case of these Braille drawings? I know sometimes emails won’t send if the message size exceeds a certain limit.
I hope everyone is doing well, and my apologies for such a long reply.
Blessings,
Valerie
