I've heard that if you put mothballs around your plants and garden that the 
critters won't bother anything because they don't like the smell of the 
mothballs. and the mothballs won't hurt the critters.

Squarrels did not eat the gords, the one year we planted them.  I
even left one drying in easy reach that was not disturbed.  I didn't even
think about squarrels bothering them till this was posted.
However, that same year, squarrels or some other critter destroyed all my
butter cups bulbs I had dug up to reset in the Fall.  I had always been told
that squarrels did not like buttercups.

I know they will eat fruit from the trees and steal corn from the field, but
don't know about gords.  I've never had them take my tomatoes, cucumbers or
squash.

I hope squirrels don't like gords.  We have way too many in my neighborhood.
