The ships are so large that you rarely feel like you are in the middle of 2000 people.  Of course some cruise lines manage the crowds better than others.  On Carnival I felt like we were being herded like cattle some of the time.  I've never felt that way on Royal Caribbean.  There are places out on the decks where all you hear is the wind and the waves.  Our last cruise we had a balcony and it was very peaceful.  Eating in the formal dining room makes you feel very classy and it is included in the price of the cruise.  There are adult only pools and hot tubs which are very relaxing.  Then there is the spa where you can pay for a number of different types of services designed to relax you, or sit in the spa's common area and curl up with a good book or your knitting.  I had one of my best massages on the last cruise we took3 years ago.  So when it is said that there is something for everyone on a cruise,  they really mean it.  Now if you really like camping out in nature, then a cruise is not the thing for you.

Annette I really think my friend is joking when she talks about the convention cruise.

Yes, I think there would be a lot of issues to work out.

I'm probably strange, but I have no desire to go on a cruise and personally think it sounds like a terrible vacation option.  I want nature, quiet, hiking trails and the like.  Also being around 2000 people sounds like torture to me. Lol

The per night cost of a cruise is usually between $125 - $300 and up per night per person.  The numbers of nights on board start at 2 and go up from there.  Now, that does include food, but not taxes, fees, travel insurance, ground transportation, gratuities , and obtaining a passport if you do not already have one (unless it is a cruise that stays within the United States boundaries, but these are limited and are usually smaller ships).  There are deals to be had for significantly less money, but they are usually for last minutes bookings and for less desirable room accommodations.  I have no idea how the cost for conference space compares to those at a hotel or conference center, but given the limited cruise ships that could handle a convention the size of the National NFB, that I shudder to imagine.  

I do know that some people have taken a cruise via their own arrangements either before or after the National Convention since they were already in Florida.  Keep in mind that summer and during the December holidays are the most expensive time to go on a cruise.

Now do not think that I do not like cruises, because I think they are one of the best options for vacation, especially for families and groups who have a wide range of preferences for leisure activities, as well as a great option for allowing independent mobility for people with low or no vision.

One of my friends thinks that the NFB should have the national convention on a cruise line.

The ships are huge and could probably hold everyone and have room for all the events.  I'm not sure how they would manage so many guide dogs on the ship.

It would be an interesting time.

Sometimes there are some really good deals on cruises out of Baltimore, plus for you, you would only have to deal with the cost of ground transportation, and not airfare and ground transportation.  The Port in New Jersey has deals as well.  Although the trip there would be a bit longer for you, there are sometimes buses that pick up in the Washington Metro area and go directly to the port.

I enjoyed it, because I had never been on a large ship.  Sounds like a little town on the water!
That’s one adventure I will never get to enjoy, unless I win the lottery!!!
Her chance to make jewelry, was also interesting!
Her friend was using a walker, so its nice to know, a ship can accomidate most handicaps.
