Oh, Catherine,
I’m guessing that Pearl is a Lab or maybe she thinks she is.  When I had Jelly I resorted to putting all food in the microwave, not on the counter or bench.  I also would take newspaper to our bedroom and line the floor by the door if she got into something that might likely come back up at night; like the corn on the cob she ate, husks and all!  Crazy adorable dog.
She’s been gone for more than 10 years and I still put food items in the microwave rather than leaving it out on the counter.  Not a bad habit for me.
Your vet bill has to hurt.  Hope Pearl has a speedy recovery.
