There are some good websites that tell you things to look for when buying a
sewing machine.  You can also find good reviews on different types of
machines.  I just purchased a very basic Brothers brand machine.  It had
good ratings and is easy to use.  It will do straight, zigzag and a few
fancy stitches.  It can also make button holes and has an attachment for
zippers.  I found it at Wal-Mart.  They had all the machines set up so I
could check them out.  I also asked everyone I knew what kind of machine
they prefer.

I made sure that I can easily feel all the settings on the machine and have
put a couple braille labels on it as well.

You do not need any special machine because you are blind.  There are things
available for guides and protecting your fingers, but if you are using a
machine concentrate and be aware of where you are putting your fingers and
pay attention on what you are doing.

As far as purchasing a sewing machine goes, do you have anyone that has used
a sewing machine in your family or wouldn't mind working with you.  If you
have a sewing machine store near you or Sear's store go there and tell them
you are interested in a sewing machine and then let them show you some of
the machines with some of the features.  Sewing machine places also have
used machines, but let them show you the ones that have the auto threading
ask how to reverse, thread machine, thread bobbin cut thread where the
stitch length, needle position and have them tell you about what stitches it
has on board and what you need to do to change to different stitches.

Now this is a lot I just dumped on you, and also find out if they give
lessons if you purchase the machine from them.

I will tell you I have about 6 machines in my house and I havwe been sewing
since I was 10 years old.  I went blind when I was 46 so I sewed for a long
time with sight.  

I got an olkd Singer Feather weight machine last year when I went to
Convention in Florida.  The people that I bought it from had refurbished it
and had gotten this seam guide, finger guard and put it all on this machine.
Well I had one of these machines which I purchased when I was like 15 or 16
years old.  It was the first sewing machine that I bought on my own.  It was
also the first machine that I dragged out after I went blind to touch and
figure if I could sew on it or not.  So when I got this refurbished one as
soon as I got it home I took off the finger guards I did leave the seam
guide on, but considering if I will leave it on or take it off.  As these
things are in my way.  

Sew plan on visiting these sewing machine stores and pick on the sales
peoples brains so you can experience and decide what you feel works better
for you.  

What do you think you want to sew and make?  Think about that too as that
will help you decide what type of machine you might want to look for.  There
are brand new machines you can purchase online , but you need to test some
out first before you decide on making a purchase.

All of the above I would love to learn! In the sewing class do you have to
know hand stiching or do you teach how to use a machine? What sewing
machines are accessible for the blind?
I heard about Singer on QVC but I don't know if it is accessible for me. It
had buttons, switches, levers and a built in computer, when looking for a
machine what to look for? Should I buy in stores or online?

We have a monthyly knitted dish cloth email class. Do quilting, sewing, loom
knitting, beading macramae, crocheting.

Take a look at our list of pass classes  as new folks join the list and
mention that they would have liked to take one of those classes that has
been done already and we put together a class from what folks would like to
try.

What craft would you like to learn more about or need help in?

My name is Naima Leigh and I live in Atlanta Ga.

I don't know my commission for the blind in my state, but I heard of my
library for the blind and need to visit them to learn more about these
services. I get digital books and in braille from them.

Will you be one of my teachers when I get my footing for this new
experience. What other crafts does this group do?

I am Terry K and live in South Carolina. I have been reading your posts
along the way and wanted to make few suggestions, if I may. It will take you
a little while to learn all about Krafters Korners but you will. We do have
a fund if you can not pay the membership for a year. I would suggest you go
to the website, krafterskorners.org and read as much as you can so you might
learn a little that might interest you. I am not sure where you live but I
would also suggest you contact your Commission for the Blind in your state
for help in training. The first thing they will suggest you doing is to join
the National Library service for the Blind and it it is there you will get
more info on services and reading. I am totally blind and I am one of the
crochet teachers here. I had to retrain myself when I lost my sight but in
addition to me here there are a lot of others here who do beautiful crafts
and you can come along and do it too. Keep plugging along and you will be
doing a lot of things real soon.

I joined last night around midnight, and I have been getting a good feel of
this group and love it.

I talked to my mom about joining classes, yeah, the $20 is a bit high for me
since I'm on a budget. She told me that her sister, herself and mom all
crocheted, knitted, and sewed when they were younger. She said also it was
easier for them because they have sight. How can you teach a nearly blind
person how to nit, crochet and use a sewing machine safely? How can you
teach a nearly blind person this over the phone? How many days a week are
the classes? If I miss the scheduled time can I make it up? Can I pick the
time or is it already set? How many students will be in the group? Are there
any accessible crafting books for the blind? How do you read and understand
them? Do you use the fat needles to craft with? Is there any accessible
sewing machines for the blind? Can you use a sewing machine if you don't
know how to sew?

through paypal or you can send a check to our Treasurer who is Cindy Zimmer.
Our Website is pretty easy, but check it out, and see if you have any
trouble. There is no other charge, and if the 20 dollars is not practical
for you, we can work something out.

I wanted to share my good news.  I told a few of you on the chat Monday

Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services as a vision rehabilitation
