Machine knitting will have you screaming into the night. So no not a good introduction into crafting. I started off with big needles and learned to knit. But when introduced to crochet, I fell in love. One needle was easier for my small hands to handle.  

So start with something that you won't have to invest hundreds of dollars. Figure out what you want to make, i.e. scarves, hats, baby stuff. Then go touch some knitted items and some crochet items and see what peaks your interest. Looming might be a good idea if holding two knitting needles is hard for you, plus having the weight of the yarn falling off the needles. So think about looming. Can you follow verbal instructions? Do you have good hand dexterity and good fine motor skills?  Can you follow a recipe and do the steps for example

Nella, the ones I have are like forty inches long. Maybe a foot deep. I have a Silver reed SK890 bulky with a hundred and fifty needles, though my memory may not be precise.  There is an antenna on the back you feed the yarn through that feeds down into the carriage. The carriage slides right to left back and forth. The knitted piece come out the front on the wrong side.  You put weights on the yarn piece to keep it even and the stitches take on the piece.  Every so often a guy in a striped shirt and says "faulse start." This means you take the yarn off the machine role it up and start again.  When you forget to put a weight on, he comes out and says "personal ffoul." That means pray the yarn didn't do anything to wacked out and you can continue forward knitting, giggle.

I do lots of things so I won't throw the machine out the window. But really once you get on to the machine's quirks, it goes well.

I don't think they set them up in the store, either.  They don't have the room nor do they have someone that knows how to work one confidently.  Maybe one or two might have someone working that knows a little about them, but no one like your Buddy!

I do indeed  know a totally blind person can do machine knitting. You do need a teacher. You do need a lot of patience with yourself and with the machine.  Our Ramona machine knits as I do as well. Though right now I am enjoying looming.  

Jean, there is a variety of stitches, most of which I don't know. I do know how to make cables, Islets, but mainly good old stockinet. I know how to increase and decrease.

Call around different yarn shops to see if they can show you how to use a knitting machine and see for yourself. Also Joanne's has them. I am not sure about Michaels or other stores.

Loren, remember the old fashion typewriters that when you pressed down a key magically somehow the right key of thirty something keys would hit your paper. Then at the end of the line you would throw the carriage and return to the left side of the paper. Well the knitting machine is kind of similar in that the machine is set up by me to use x number of needles. I take the carriage back and forth to make a row of knitting.  So that is how I keep track. I set up the machine and the carriage pretty much does the rest to keep those needles in line, smile.

I finally really looked and one of the subject lines included machine knitting. This is a whole other kind of knitting. It is using a piece of equipment to knit with a hundred or more needles. So definitely not needle nor loom knitting, warm smile.
