[Nfb-krafters-korner] staging a revolt

Naima how long have you been blind and have you had any independent living
training?

If you have the right training you can easily use the stove top and oven.
Many of us on this list enjoy cooking and baking. There is even a blind
cooks list and the people there love sharing their knowledge to help others.

There is nothing wrong with using your hands as long as you are washing them
frequently. I wonder how your Mother would suggest kneading bread without
touching it?

I know plenty of sighted cooks that will take their finger to remove dough
from a spoon and the like. I've even read cook books where the author tells
how a dough should feel. My Grandmother always used her hands to mix that
fabulous biscuit dough that she used to make. I've always wondered if that
is why mine is never as good as hers. Maybe I'm missing the ingredient of
her kind loving hands.

I don't want to say bad things about your Mother, but telling you she
doesn't want to eat what you make is very unkind. I wonder if there are any
support groups she could attend to help her adjust to your blindness?

Also does anyone know if Hadley has information for the family members of
the blind?

Sometimes we need to tell those around us to step back and not interfere
with our independence. These are difficult conversations to have, but they
will benefit everyone in the long run. You are taking some good first steps
by connecting with people that you can learn from and that will empower you.

Nella

Yes please! my family isn't too keen on me making things because of my
blindness and how I do things differently then them.

When I bake I use my hands to find the cookie sheet and get messy. I love
that part, but my mom thinks that's nasty and tells me she doesn't want any
of the cookies or other baked goods because of that.

I also was taught in a small cooking group to feel when you are mixing to
make sure you have got all of the mix and to feel after you cracked an egg
to make sure you haven't got any egg shell in the bowl. What's rong with
that? I have got to eat too. What's rong with sighted people?

The microwave and George Forman grill are my essentials and I can't cook
without them. But I need sighted assistance with baking since I'm not to
thrilled about open flames or extremely hot things like that.

Hi Naima, if you've never needle knitted before, it's best to start off with
something simple like a scarf or a dishclothor a coaster that's in a simple
pattern like a Garter stitch just until you get the hang of knitting. Then,
you can move on to bigger and different things like shawls, blankets, and
then when you get really experienced, sweaters.
The same thing applies to crocheting. Start off small, and work your way up
to larger projects.
Latch hooking is good, just after I went blind, and got my first guide dog,
I made a wall hanging of a Black Labrador Retrievers head that was the
spitting image of my dog.
Loom Knitting might be the simplist craft of all, you can make many nice and
useful items on a loom.
Many of us here at K K were in your shoes at one time thinking or saying
"What can I do now that I am blind?" We all overcame those thoughts and are
crafters now.
We are all here, and ready willing and waiting to help you to become a
crafter too.
Why do you feel that no one would want anything that you made?
you can talk to me off list if you'd feel more comfortable sharing your
thoughts privately.
Do you need my E Mail address again?

Knitting is with two needles, if you mean crocheting, it uses one needle.
You can make many of the same items with both but they look different.
Latch hooking is used to make decorative rugs. You usually purchase a kit
that has the pattern on the material you use for the backing of the rug. It
is easy for a blind person to latch hook but the patterns are not available
in braille or print. You complete the pattern by looking at a picture of the
backing. I have done some latch hooking but I had to ask a family member to
tell me each row as I went.
