Linda, six from six to ten foot vines and one tomato. We learned how to pollinate as we don't have very many bees around here. The vines were all very lush.  

The next year we about starved the vines and got several tomatoes maybe a half dozen off of two vines. 

We tried the hanging vines and got some cherry tomatoes, but not many.

Every variety were for our area. Washington just doesn't have good tomatoes. They are dry inside.

I don't believe Tennessee has ever produced 10 foot tomato vines.  My mother would tell you that you had a boy vine.

Linda, I had ten foot tomato plants with no tomatoes. So do not over water then. You want them to produce fruit not leaves, smile.

Tomatoes need some shade, not a lot, however.  Keep them watered and they should be fine.  Petunias Love sun, smell good and will look nice in baskets.  When you go to the garden center just ask what will take full sun.  Your sun may not be as hot as Tennessee.

You will need large container for your tomatoes.  Hanging geraniums are beautiful.  Just feed them weekly, some shade and keep the dead blooms picked off.

Container gardens are easy to do. Get tips from your garden store of how to have one on your balcony, or deck, or window seal. Or if you have a nice patch of ground where you can plant.
