Hi Krafters,
I also collect lighthouses, and I don't have any more room for them. The new rule for lighthouses that come into my house is they have to be usable.
I have lighthouse clocks, oven mits and potholders, Sensey warmer, salt and pepper shakers, cookie jars, tea pot, canisters, magnets, soap, sink stopper, t-shirts, trinket boxes, jewelery, pictures, dishes, and even the chain pulls on my ceiling fans.
I collected expensive series for awhile, but at $50 a pop it was too expensive. When my grandson was very small, we would take a model of a lighthouse and sit down with it and explore every inch of and talk about the rocks, walls, windows, out buildings and just every feature. It was so much fun to do that with him.

Isn't it amazing how dirty the dishes can get in the china cabinets?
I almost always have to rinse mine off before using them.
I have lots and lots of dishes; I love dishes. A friend once told me I had more dishes than any one woman should have. Lol
I have 6 china cabinets full and that's not counting the ones that live in the kitchen. I don't allow myself to get more because I no longer have space to display them.

Oh, Becky, you just don't know!! I am in the process of rearranging my home, which means moving my china cabbinent. While removing the china and christal I discovered how dirty the mirror and glass was. The contens have been washed, setting on my table waiting to be returned to their assigned places. Now this chore was begun on Saturday. Now am I lazy? Sure, and guess what, I am loving not have to rush and get it finished!! When my daughters were small I could not have done this. I need to stop babbling on this subject.Smile!!

Linda, you are not lazy, just like I am not lazy eating on snack tables, instead of setting place settings at the table. We have a variety of things we can do in this country and that is wonderful. I was at someone's home and we were only permitted to eat sitting on a tablecloth on the floor, weird, but normal for that country the man was from. It was very hard for him to sit at a table. They believe eating should be a totally relaxed celebration.
He ate very slowly as for his custom, which drove me and the others crazy.
Just a simple dinner took over an hour.
Hey how about a bed tray, smile. I made dinner and took it upstairs to where Kevin was laying down. We ate off of a bed tray. It was really fun.

When I was a bachelor a pack of 100 or 200 paper plates, cups and plastic utensils that I usually could get at the dollar stor for $1 each did me just fine.

Linda, have you tried the Dawn dish washing soap, I think it is in a gray bottle, or so my husband says. Put the dishes in hot water with that stuff, and voila you only have to give a quick wipe and 90 percent of the food is gone. There is always a dish washer or portable dish washer. I am with you and I don't like doing pots and pans. But with the Dawn dish soap takes very little time.

To me a kitchen table and a dining room table are miles apart in what I would do. Now if you are like me and only have a dining room table I strike a happy medium. First who are you. Are you the formal dining room type? Are you the casual kitchen type where everything and everyone gathers in the kitchen? Either way, I like a dining room to look like the most delicious wondrous thing is about to happen. So I want candles a nice low center piece, and probably my table set all the time with tasteful dishes, silverware, cloth napkins. I saw this in a home a set table and just loved the idea. I walked in and got excited thinking about what kinds of things would happen in such a lovely place. To me, no place mats except for the prince and princesses. Kitchen is kick back with plastic tablecloth for little ones, or just a simple cloth. Maybe sugar, salt,pepper, fruit bowl on the table
Yes, I always do themes for the Holidays. When I had a kitchen, I had Easter table cloth, Christmas, balloons, red-white and blue themes, and a picnic table theme. The only theme I would do pretty much is Christmas in my dining room. Dining room was pretty much changed with the seasons. I, me, do not like placemats for adults. I do have a washer and do not mind washing my tablecloth after you leave. My grand kids are pretty clean eaters. Not the under ten ones, smile. But that is fine. I run my hands around the cloth where the little ones, and me sit and spray the spots then wash. So no fuss at all.
Oh if I have napkin rings I fold the napkins put them in the rings and then they are set diagonally across the dish. This is a very pretty look.
But hey this house we are kick back, so my dining room table is in my Livingroom. Right now I have a cloth napkin flat on the table in the middle so it looks like a diamond square. On each corner are things Kevin brought back from China several years ago. In the middle is a small rug that is three dimensional. On one corner is a six inch tall vase all decorated, a glass ball painted inside, a jade ball within a ball, and the other corner is a brass bell which really doesn't go, but I like the shape. The shape is an apple. . but usually I have a red water pitcher, or butterfly vase with du dads around them. Just simple things on my tablecloth of either white or blue. At Christmas my table is much more formal.
