[Nfb-krafters-korner] my personal take on storage solutionsRe: Nfb-krafters-korner Digest, Vol 121, Issue 27

Hi, everyone.

I won't lie. I used to be very bad at storing my supplies. The result?
I lost a lot of stuff, much to my dismay. To this day, following a
pair of moves, three moves, actually, I still have not located two or
three vials of stitch markers that went AWOL. So with the impetus of
being in a nice, new house, here is what I'm going to do.

My projects in progress--I am a knitter and want to do a lot more--are
stored in a pair of large, heavy-duty bags with all the notions
necessary for that particular project. These bags have very small
handles, which I suggest you use because you wouldn't believe how
badly yarn can tangle! All the needles, scissors, markers, etc. go in
those bags with the projects and don't come out until I finish up.

In my house, I have a whole craft room, which was the third bedroom,
where I intend to put spinning stuff and possibly sewing things and
items for lace-making. I use the closet, or will when all the extra
boxes are gotten rid of, for spare yarns, needles, and so on. My
primary knitting needles are a circular set, the kind that allows you
to swap different needle tip sizes, and I keep them all in the case
they arrived in. I plan to get some of the plastic bins you'd normally
use to store your spare clothing, the ones with snap-on lids, and
store yarn in them by color with fiber types in Braille on plastic
bags within those bins. I also wish to rig up a system for my crochet
hooks, once I learn how to crochet and collect a bunch of them, and my
needles. My ideal solution would be to store hook and needle sizes
that are equivalent together. Before I can comment on other crafts, I
plan to take classes, learn about the space requirements of the
equipment/supplies, and use the space in the closet below the shelving
unit for some of it.

A comment on storing yarn for projects in progress. I find I don't
really like the skein holders that let you pull yarn out through holes
in the top as you work. I've unfortunately found it snarls too easily.
My solution, which is far from perfect, is to simply store the yarn in
the bottom of my knitting bag underneath of whatever I'm working on,
pulling it out through the zipper; I find I can untangle it most
easily from there ... most of the time, that is.

I know some of you lack the space to do something this elaborate, but
if you don't, find whatever works for you, what you'll remember, and
what feels most efficient.
