Susan;
A life line is a place holder, used to prevent your stitches from coming out when you remove stitches. Most people put a life line, every 10 or 20 rows or when there is a patern repeat. This allows the knitter to take out stitches, if they make a mistake, back to the life line, with out all loosing the stitches, behind the life line.

If I did 10 rows of knit, then I would put in a life line, knit 10 more rows and add another life line, then knit 10 rows. Now if there are no errors, I can remove the first life line and insert it. If I found an error in my last section, I could pull out my last 10 rows and still have 20 rows on my life line, ready to knit back onto my needles.

A life line can be a size 0 or 00 knitting needle, ribbon, thicker yarn...
It needs to be a lot longer than your work, so it can dangle, outside your work and not be in the way.

Hope this helps.

Terry P.

Hi Listers,

I don't know what you mean about a life line.

Hi, Henry.
You can put a lifeline in, no matter what the shape of your piece is.
Just make sure you have the amount of ribbon for the length of your piece, plus some extra for threading. I use the lifeline as much as possible, changing them whenever I need to. For example, when I do socks, I put one in after the toes, then halfway up the foot. Then I take the one from the toes out and put it where the live stitches are when I finish the sole and want to turn the heel. The stitches just sit on the lifeline the way they would sit on the cable of your needle, so you can pull the lifeline out when you're done.

I use the ribbon because I can tell it apart from the yarn, and because it slips out easily when the lifeline needs to be removed.

HTH,
Dani
