Marianne, often the less expensive machines are heavier than the higher priced machines, but they often work fine. My daughter is still using one she got in college at least 25 years ago. It is portable, but heavier to lift from its case to the table than I like, but she has used it a lot for everything from Halloween costumes to elaberate wedding dresses. She made several hotstcold dish carriers for Christmas presents, and I got one. Very nice. I don't know what it would cost today, but would guess similar to the kind Nella got.
