So the smaller you make something, the thicker it will be?  Is that right?

I used a smaller hook and the bootie is too thick.  Thanks for your input.

Hello,
It may not be the yarn, it may be that you crochet more loosely than the
gauge needed for the pattern. Try going down 2 hook sizes and use the same
yarn.
