Hems are also found at the bottom of sleaves to turn up the raw edge of the fabric.

Selvage the finished edge on a piece of fabric going across the grain of the fabric.

The grain of the fabric is the direction of the fibers with the least amount of stretch in it.

Deborah, you did pretty well. Let me try gathering. You runn a gathering thread by hand by sewing small stitches along the edge of a piece that you want to pucker up to attach it to a smaller piece of fabric. Then you pull on one end very carefully to move the thread through the fabric so that it gathers up. Keep the other end firmly in one place. When it is gathered to the right size, you baste or pin the gathered piece to the flat piece and sew them together. You can gather up a lot of fullness or a little for a skirt, a sleeve or other parts of a garment. You can gather with the sewing machine, also, but you just have to pull on either the top thread or the bobbin thread, not both. For me it is a lot easier to do it than to explain it when I can't show it to you. I'll let somebody else try to explain selvidge.

For me, it'll be more fun answering the terms than sewing! <g< So here
goes:

What does baste or tack mean?
When you baste, you sometimes baste when you're going to sew seams later, to give a guide. You basically sew small stitches from one end of the seam to the other. Or is it when you just pin from one end to the other to give a guide?

 What does darning mean?
Darning means to repair items--such as clothing--as in fix tears, rips, etc.
You can also hem, as in take out a hem and make pants shorter or add a hem and make them longer, or take up a seam to make something fit tighter; loosen to make something fit if someone gains weight, etc.

 Explain the term gathering.
I know what gathering means but not sure I can explain. You can gather in preparation for pleating and things like that. My mom has done it but I can't explain it.

 What is a hem?
A hem is usually (but not always) at the bottom of a pair of pants, dress, skirt, whatever. It finishes off a garment by having a small part of the garment "turned under" and it can be taken out to add more of a hem or less of a hem. You can also find hems other places--like on pockets, turned under for a neckbland, etc.

 Describe a seam.
A seam is usually a long area between two pieces of something that were sewn together. Two pieces of something are joined together to make the seam.
Different kinds of stitches can be used to sew the seam. You can baste and pin across the seam to give a guide or you can just sew across using all sorts of stitches like the whip stitch, etc.

Do you know what the words selvage means?
Selvedge is the edge of a garment--if I remember correctly.

I'm just guessing and sure could be wrong.

What's kind of funny is that my mom could usually give me all the answers!!!!! She used to sew for the public and also worked in sewing plants. She could do anything! However, she's very ill and in the hospital and undergoing a colonoscopy today but it'll be interesting to ask her how many I got wrong. <g< She tried hard to teach me but I never got up to her standards; she did beautiful work. I learned a lot from just watching her though.

Deb B.

Feel free to try to answer some or all of these and please share your answers. I promise, it will be fun.

Nella
