Now when I was piece working my clown dolls I would basically sew and
assemble all the same thingsat one time and not stop to trim threads or
anything like that. There was a glat rectangle piece that I folded under 3
edges and would sew like 10 of them not stopping. When I
Finished I would cut them apart. And put in a pile. The next step would
be using kite string I would lay the string on the right side of this
rectangle and zigzag over the top of the string and pull some string out
before laying it on the next rectangle and keep doing this until I had the
10 done. I would take this rectangle and pin one at the back neck seam
right on top of right side of clown costume and pull up gathers by pulling
string so the rectangle[collar] would be the same size as the neck line.I
would use large straight pins to hold it in place and I would sew thru all
of these layers and then lay the collar flat and stitch thru the gather ed
collar with the clown outfit laying flat. So if you picked up the collar
you would see the stitching holding things in place. I then would take the
seam ripper and cut the stgring in the neckline and pull the string out.

It was fun sewing all those L chaped shoes together as in a row without
stopping. I only stopped to put a new bobbin in place. I would take like
20 bobbins and fill them. I used white cones of thread and I had these
cones set up and blamped in place in my working area.

I got so busy I had to farm out the clown outfits to be sewn by others.

Joycetogether and then pin the other side to the center back seam fold the
rectangle in half and pin that to the center front seam.

Bernice, that is a very professional way to do it. My home ec teacher would
be proud of you. I almost forgot about that technique. I have never wanted
to spend that much time.

When I made a gathered skirt, I sewed two parallel lines, pulled each thread
until it was pulled together to the desired size. Then I sewed between the
two threads to hold the gathering in place. Finally, I pulled out the
threads I pulled to gather the material.

For me, it'll be more fun answering the terms than sewing! <g< So here
goes:

What does baste or tack mean?
When you baste, you sometimes baste when you're going to sew seams later, to
give a guide. You basically sew small stitches from one end of the seam to
the other. Or is it when you just pin from one end to the other to give a
guide?

 What does darning mean?
Darning means to repair items--such as clothing--as in fix tears, rips, etc.
You can also hem, as in take out a hem and make pants shorter or add a hem
and make them longer, or take up a seam to make something fit tighter;
loosen to make something fit if someone gains weight, etc.

 Explain the term gathering.
I know what gathering means but not sure I can explain. You can gather in
preparation for pleating and things like that. My mom has done it but I
can't explain it.

 What is a hem?
A hem is usually (but not always) at the bottom of a pair of pants, dress,
skirt, whatever. It finishes off a garment by having a small part of the
garment "turned under" and it can be taken out to add more of a hem or less
of a hem. You can also find hems other places--like on pockets, turned
under for a neckbland, etc.

 Describe a seam.
A seam is usually a long area between two pieces of something that were sewn
together. Two pieces of something are joined together to make the seam.
Different kinds of stitches can be used to sew the seam. You can baste and
pin across the seam to give a guide or you can just sew across using all
sorts of stitches like the whip stitch, etc.

Do you know what the words selvage means?
Selvedge is the edge of a garment--if I remember correctly.

I'm just guessing and sure could be wrong.

What's kind of funny is that my mom could usually give me all the
answers!!!!! She used to sew for the public and also worked in sewing
plants. She could do anything! However, she's very ill and in the hospital
and undergoing a colonoscopy today but it'll be interesting to ask her how
many I got wrong. <g< She tried hard to teach me but I never got up to her
standards; she did beautiful work. I learned a lot from just watching her
though.

Feel free to try to answer some or all of these and please share your
answers. I promise, it will be fun.

Nella
