[Nfb-krafters-korner] help, please

Hi Linda,

Maybe looking into another avenue of creativity. Maybe something in the area of music? There are various types of electronic music and drum simulators. They require very minimal pressure to activate the 1 or more active areas on the pad like device. I think there might even be apps like this for the iPad.

Have you done an interest inventory with her?

Do you know if she likes games? What about iPhone games. The Blindfold series of games in the Apple App Store can be done with 1-3 simple gestures. One of my favorite is Blindfold Tiles. I think they have a bowling and a basketball game. Another game is Blind Archery. I do not remember if it is part of the Blindfold games. If you find out that she likes brain teasers and riddles, let me know and I will see if I can come up with a very simple one that I used to use.

What about checkers? Attach handles so to speak to the pieces. This will allow her to grasp and move them. The handles for one set of pieces should be different than those for the other set. The top of one could be rounded or dome shaped, and the other flat and square.

Make a modified Tic-Tac-Toe game. Get a square piece of metal. Cover the top with felt or other material. Be sure to wrap the material over the edges to the underside and glue them in place to hold the material on. Put rubber feet on the bottom to stop it from sliding. Make the Tic-Tac-Toe grid by gluing some type of strips to the material covered side of the playing board. Maybe layers of cardboard strips. Make round and square pieces to represent the X's and O's. Attach handles such as described above for the checkers game.

What about listening to books and/or music?

HTH,
Annette

Terry, this lady has multiple disabilities. She, in addition to her use of one hand and blindness, has had her legs removed. She is also on dialysis. She lives with her mother, who is 75 years old; therefore, help at home is limited. Her mother is very supportative, but, can only do so much. Braille is not an option because of the lack of sensitivity in her fingers. She uses her knuckles to push the buttons on her watch, for example.
I really appreciate all the suggestions I have received. I am considering each one; and each one reminds me how limited she is. I have received several workable ideas. This is a great site to help each other.
Linda

Linda;
Does she belong to an NFB chapter. My NFB chapter helped buy a one handed brailler for a child that came to us from another country. I believe she has been adopted and is getting a lot of medical care, here in the US. She had a lot of damage done to her face and hands, from a bombing!
The one handed brailler has done wonders for this child. Maybe a chapter could help your client. There is also the lions club!
Like Becky said, Dictation would also be great for her. Maybe drawing with an embosser, too.
Can she hold a pencil or crayon. How about a braille coloring book. I think the NFB sells some or National Braille Press.

I do not know what it is called or where I did it, but at some NFB event, we took plastic bead like things and put them in a mold and when done, they were melted, some how and we ended up with a solid ornament.
Anyone know what I am talking about? I do not know what I did with mine!

Terry P.

She is an amputee. I don't want to try too many things after she was unsuccessful with the project we tried yesterday. I learn every day. Yesterday I learned to always have an alternative method of teaching a craft. I really did not enjoy watching her disappointment and feeling of failure.
I do appreciate all the help I am receiving.

Hi,
Here's a trick question for you.
Could she use her feet?
She could use the good hand to hold the yarn, then use her feet to make the loops.
